2002 MTB Worlds - CDMKaprun, Austria, 24 August - 1 September, 2002Results Team Relay Cross Country Downhill Four Cross Other events August 30 - Junior Cross CountryAussies sweep junior cross-countryBy Tim Vincent in Kaprun Lisa Mathison (17) and Trent Lowe (18) executed a rare double for Australia in Kaprun today, taking out the gold medals in the women's and men's junior cross-country. Lisa Mathison stormed home to win the Junior Women's race and take the first XC medal of the 2002 World Mountain Bike Championships. Her Mum and Dad cheered her on from track-side as her lead grew in each of the two and a quarter laps. The real battle was for second and third place as Austrian Elisabeth Osl and Petra Bublova of the Czech Republic rode most of the race within ten seconds of each other. Urged on by the crowd, Elisabeth Osl had the better last lap and took the Silver. Petra Bubolva was far from safe in third place. Switzerland's Sarah Koba made a strong charge almost closing the one minute deficit she had on third place at top of the course on the final lap. Fifth place went to the current European champ Bettina Schmidt. In the men's race, Trent Lowe completed a dream day for Australia when he rode off the front of the 95 strong Junior Men's field to win Gold, Australia's second in as many races. Like his team-mate Lisa Mathison, Trent finished with a two minute lead ahead of some close racing. Russia's Iouri Trofimov came in second, just holding out Italy's Tony Longo and a quick succession of four more riders Lukas Flueckiger (Swi), Jaroslav Kulhavy (Cze), Rudi Van Houts (Ned) and Benjamin Rudiger (Ger), all finishing less than one minute behind him. Starting at 3pm, the junior men raced in the hottest part of the day. "The weather suited me" said Trent after the race. "At home I am often training 30 or 40 degree heat".
