If Tom Robinson was impressive in winning the Rosebery Wheel, his performance the next day made cycling stalwarts scratch their heads in awe.

The 16-year-old Launceston rider who is in his first year of competition in open company, backed up Saturday's effort with another outstanding handicap victory, winning the Mersey Valley - Devonport Cycling Club's Forestry Tasmania Wheelrace over 2000 m.

Re-handicapped to 80 m after his win on Tasmania's rugged West Coast the day prior, didn't seem to make much difference to young Robinson, who outsprinted newly crowned Devonport Wheel champion, Jarrod Harman, Burnie's Aaron Jones and Launceston veteran Steve Martini in a bunch finish.

Robinson qualified in fourth place via his heat but it was in the final where he picked up the tempo.

"I was aware of what and who was around me and I really had to just pick the right time to start my final sprint," Robinson said.

His excellent efforts at two separate carnivals over the weekend has seen Robinson jump to the lead in Cycling Tasmania's Rider-of-the-Season award and he will almost certainly be declared the winner at next Saturday's season-ending St Helens Carnival.

Robinson placed in all three events at the Rosebery Carnival which score points for the award and at yesterday's MVDCC Carnival, repeated the performance.

Devonport's John Rayner won his second successive Lightning Handicap, while Jarrod Harman, who flew into Tasmania at 1 p.m. from the Australian Road Championships in Adelaide, jumped on his track bike and promptly won both the keirin and A Grade Scratch, as well as finishing second in the wheelrace final.

After weeks of near misses, Sarah Cure won the Women's MVDCC Forestry Tasmania Wheel ahead of Sarah Eaves and new Rosebery Wheel winner, Kate De Paoli.

Cure also won the Lightning Handicap, while Flowery Gully based rider Grace Sulzberger collected the keirin-scratch race double. Winners of the MVDCC junior wheelraces were Timothy Taylor (U17), Sam Brett (U15) and Bradley Ryan (U13).
