Bikes and bits at the Australian/Oceania Track Titles

What's the latest and greatest to come from the world of track cycling? Anthony Tan takes a peek at a few of the track bikes and bits from the Australian/Oceania Track Titles.

Bike Technologies – Advanced Training System (BT-ATS)

In his last two years as head coach of Cycling Australia, Charlie Walsh worked extensively with Australian firm Bike Technologies to develop the Advanced Training System (BT-ATS), achieving remarkable results.

While Australian cyclists had for many years used an ergo-meter as part of their training program, according to Walsh, the units and the use of them required modification if Australia were to realise specific improvements in their cyclists. Field and laboratory tests at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Adelaide had also shown that cyclists participating solely in road racing had not developed the power required for track cycling compared to those who were doing specialist track training activities.

Despite Walsh's departure after the Sydney Olympic Games, many of Australia’s best track and road cyclists continue to use the BT-ATS system and Walsh's training principles with great success.

Pavé track bike

This brand name's something of an oxymoron, given this bike will never be ridden on cobbles leading to Roubaix, although the Ferrari red paint work certainly was eye-catching!

Cervélo P2T

Cervélo's track offering has a very similar design to their road frames, featuring eliptically-shaped tubes and "smartwall tubing", where wall thicknesses around the tube's perimeter are not constant - so more material is used on the sides (lateral high stress points), and less on the top and bottom of the tube.

Like their time trial frames, Cervélo's P2T features a cutaway seat tube, designed to decrease the drag of the rear wheel, claimed to be as much as 30 per cent. The adjustable seatpost - common to all Cervélo bicycles - offers an effective seat tube angle range between 73 and 78 degrees, making this machine very handy whatever your preference, be it pursuits, points races or sprints.

Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi!

OK, the artwork's not as impressive as Fabio Sacchi's Cannondale, but it's kinda cute anyway.

Rochelle Gilmore's Pinarello

The Ausra Gruodis-Safi rider's stunning Pinarello track frame is quite literally hot off the mould, only turning up at Gilmore's home late last week. Although suffering from the effects of jet lag and a heavy week of road racing, she still managed to win yet another national championship in the women's 10K Scratch Race, and will also be using this bike when she contests the 25 kilometre Points Race tomorrow evening. Rochelle also tells me she was so delighted with the bike she even took a few photos herself!
