French fries 'em

Victorian Mark French made more than a few heads turn at 16:00 AEST this afternoon at the Dunc Gray Velodrome. French was going so fast in fact that a few of his fans appeared to be rubbing their necks after his blistering show of speed on the Norweigan pine boards, qualifying fastest [10.515] for the Sprint and catapulting him to a national championship win in the process.

"Lots of people say qualifying doesn't matter so long as you get in the top six, but it definitely helps mentally if you finish in the top three," said French proudly.

Asked if there were any others to watch out for in the Sprint finals, French nominated Shaun Hopkins (NSW) as one to watch this evening, "but really I think it's going to come down to Ryan [Bayley, WA] and myself.

"This [the Sprint] is the one I really want to win; there's also the Keirin, but this event I really want to go well in," he added. "I also want to make sure I have a place in the squad for the World's, so in the Sydney World Cup, I want to ride a 10.4 or better [in the Flying 200]."

Another event on French's mind is World Championships and 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He tells me his dreams often revolve around a podium at the World Championships and the Olympic Games, although the humble rider understands he's got a tough road ahead of him with the likes of Sean Eadie, Jobie Dajka and Ryan Bayley still in the fold.

"With four of us going for three spots, it may not be a realistic goal, but it's something for me to work towards and I won't be disappointed if I don't make it, so long as it's for the right reasons."

Women Individual Pursuit

Mac-tier time

It's Mac-tier time

2001 Australian road champion Kactie Mactier (Vic) convincingly won an event she spent all of four weeks training for - and only because she had trouble organising a work visa to race with her US-based professional cycling team, Team Saturn.

"I must say I'm delighted with my win tonight and can't thank John Beasley [Victorian Institute of Sport track coach] enough," said the smiling Victorian, referring to Beasley's ability to sway the officials, which allowed Mactier to compete without the need to qualify.

Despite a relatively short period of preparation, Mactier quashed any speculation that tonight was a half-hearted effort when asked about her expectations going into the event: "I wanted to win. Preparing for the event, I told John Beasley to be honest with me, and tell me if he thought I was capable [of winning] or if I was wasting my time."

A former junior national track squad member, Mactier was soon at home on the boards despite a five year layoff from track cycling. "I love the fact that it's just you against the clock and there are no external factors - it's the ultimate event where you can prove just how good you are"; a statement often heard by her partner and previous Australian time trial champion, Nathan O'Neill.

Women's 10k Scratch Race

Winning a formality for Happy Gilmore

In a somewhat predictable result, sprint ace Rochelle Gilmore (NSW) showed three road races in the last week, a 24 hour flight and virtually no preparation is not enough to stop this girl from winning.

"I certainly wasn't ready for it [the Scratch Race] after racing three races in Europe in five days," said Gilmore, who seemed rather unphased by adding another national championship to her palmares. "I felt underdone and my legs were still tired, but it's good preparation for the World Cup in Sydney later this month."

Speaking in a tone indicative of someone who's got bigger fish to fry, Gilmore acknowledges her primary focus is the Scratch Race at the World Track Championships, as the parcours for the world road championships in Hamilton, Canada, doesn't suit her abilities.

"I came second in the same event at the World's last year, so I want to go one better this year and win the world championship. The World Cup [in Sydney] is just another international race for experience, but I know it's important if I'm to have a shot at the world title," said Gilmore with determination.

Further down the road, Gilmore wants to fulfil her dreams of Olympic glory: "It's always something in the back of my head, but I'll take each day as it comes. It's always been a dream of mine, and I believe next year is the best year for me to do it."

Women's 10k Scratch Race

  • Calm before the storm - the bunch all together at the start of the women's 10k Scratch Race.
  • Rochelle Gilmore's (NSW) class more than anything pulled her through with the win tonight, still recovering from a heavy season of road racing in Europe.
  • Tammy Boyd (NZl) was one of two riders to come down in the closing moments of the Scratch Race.
