Ryan rips through with the win

The first championship final of the evening was always destined to be an exciting one. In yesterday's Flying 200, Mark French (Vic) and Ryan Bayley (WA) were a cut above, posting times of 10.515 and 10.541 respectively, so it was apt these two fought for the national Sprint title.

In round 1, French hit out hard from more than 100 metres out, with Bayley struggling to close the gap until the final turn, but it was French taking out the first out of a three round final.

Bayley reversed his fortunes in round 2, using an almost identical tactic to that of his adversary the previous round, but went out even earlier. Despite French's incredible finishing speed, the West Australian gave it everything in the home straight to make it 1-1, and as he threw himself at the line, just as he did at the Manchester World's, he popped a wheelie to even the score.

In the decider, Bayley used the same tactic, relying on brute strength to hold his finishing speed all the way to the line. The Victorian was going to have to do something special, and with 150 to go, French backed off to give himself room to come round. However, Bayley was just too strong, crossing the line at full throttle and deservedly winning the 2003 national Sprint title.

"This is the way I have to ride," said Bayley when asked about his tactics against the fast finishing Victorian. "Mark's [French] has got plenty of finishing speed, so I needed to hit out early to avoid him coming round me."

Acknowledging he still has some work to do to reach the calibre of Sprint legends Sean Eadie and Jobie Dajka, Bayley said: "I'm still learning, but the more I ride [the Sprint], the more I like it, so I want to learn a hell of a lot more about the Sprint and really make a name for myself."

However, Bayley's objectives for this year's track nationals, the Sydney World Cup don't stop at the Sprint. He also wants to win the Team Sprint and the Keirin, although for now at least, the Sprint will sit at the top of his list.

Said Bayley, "I'm realising I'm a lot better sprinter [than Keirin rider] and I'm coming up a lot better from a lot less [training]," referring to his renewed focus in this discipline, "so I want the Sprint to be my main objective for my future years on the track."

Victorians keep the medals this side of the Tasman

In a show of Trans-Tasman rivalry, the Victorian quartet of Robert Wilson, Bradley Norton, Christopher Carr and Richard England comfortably outclassed the Kiwi contingent of Peter Latham, Tim Gudsell, Richard Bowker and Marc Ryan in the finals of the Open Men Teams Pursuit Final.

During the qualifying session earlier this afternoon, the boys in blue set the fastest time [4.17.868 (55.88km/h)] and were clearly the ones to beat. The squads from New South Wales and Tasmania looked strong on paper, but could only manage third and fourth, and in the end, Gary Sutton's New South Welshmen had to be satisfied with bronze.

"It's just been a nine-week whirlwind," said a starry-eyed Robert Wilson, referring to his limited preparation and relative greeness leading up to the event. "I've never done a Team Pursuit before, but in the last two months, we've really hammered down and did as much [training] as we could because I knew we'd get better every time we trained together."

While the saying "you're only as good as your fourth man" certainly holds true in the Teams Pursuit, Victorian locomotive Robert Wilson was definitely the strongest of the four throughout, with Christopher Carr (who recently signed a professional road contract with Giant Asia) and Richard England also providing plenty of horsepower. However, the New Zealand posse appeared to have two riders considerably stronger than their other two, and as a consequence, it was a case of burning the candle at both ends for the Kiwis, conceding victory to Victoria with more than a kilometre remaining.

"We've been training with Gary Sutton and his riders in the last few weeks, and I knew the guys and knew we had the stronger team, but we'd never actually ridden together as a team before, so that was the only question mark," said a modest Chris Carr. "We didn't know a lot about them [the New Zealanders], but we were pretty confident and very determined. All the boys performed brilliantly and it was a true team effort."
