Australian/Oceania Track Titles - CNSydney, Australia, April 30 - May 4, 2003Day 1 - April 30
Reporting by Anthony Tan Women 500m Time TrialThe Anna-hilatorFor the first time ever at the Nationals, Anna Meares (Qld) has beaten her big sister Kerrie in the Time Trial, but not by much - 12/1000ths of second to be precise. The younger of the Meares sisters was as humble in victory as she has been in defeat, saying, "It was very close, and to go out there are beat an athlete like [Kerrie] is an honour - even more so because she's my sister." "This year I've taken half a second off my personal best, and hopefully by the World's, I can take another half-second off my PB," she added. Speaking about their sibling rivalry that is so often talked about in cycling circles, Kerrie mentions that it can only be a plus, and no matter what happens on the track, their parents have wisely taught them to remember that family always comes first. "Plus Kerrie's great to travel with, not only as a companion, but because she's got so much experience [racing] at an international level." Women U19 500m Time TrialTwo times the charm for BorgoNotching her second win as many years, Rebecca Borgo (NSW) convincingly won the 500m Time Trial ahead of Jesse Maclean (ACT) and Apryl Eppinger (Vic). "Both victories are just as sweet," said a rosy-cheeked Borgo, still puffing (and understandably so) after her warm-down session on the rollers. "[The difference was that] last year was a surprise, but this year everybody expected me to win. I'm just happy to have the first event out of the way so I can enjoy myself for the rest of the championships, knowing that I've qualified for the World's." Asked whether the Time Trial was her speciality, Borgo somewhat surprisingly said no, indicating that her capabilities are best suited to the Sprint. "But a lot of other girls are also much stronger in the Sprint, and anything can happen in that event. Men U19 Sprint QualifyingUnrelated to Larry, but just as quickUsed as a means of qualifying for the Sprint finals, the Flying 200 is a national championship event in itself, and race favourite Shane Perkins (Vic) set a sizzling time of 10.770 that none could better. The only other riders who could come close were second-placed Andrew Taylor (NSW) and Daniel Thorsen (Vic), though Perkins has certainly laid down the gauntlet for the finals tomorrow. Men Individual PursuitJamieson's run continuesIn his first year as a senior rider, Mark Jamieson (Tas) seemed to cruise through his way to national championship victory, first finishing as fastest qualifier, then smoking his way through the field. The beaming winner told Cyclingnews, "I'm rapt! Big Rob [Wilson, Vic] was stomping, but coming into the final k, he didn't have as much left as I thought he did." When asked if his performance guarantees him a ticket to the Worlds, the Tasmanian tiger wasn't so sure: "An individual pursuit spot is almost impossible to get for the Worlds, but the a spot in the teams pursuit is a little more attainable." On a side note, Mark told me "I'll be wearing my black Cyclingnews socks for the Scratch Race. Always good to wear black socks for the Scratch Race." That's what we like to hear. Go son! Men 1k Time TrialKersten kills the KiloCurrently serving a six-month probation for misconduct following the Moscow World Cup in February, Ben Kersten (NSW) shook off his demons at the Dunc Gray velodrome this evening. With the gold in the bag "I qualified for the World Championships, and this win means that I've also got the condition, so I'm very happy and the time [1.03.395] tonight." Commenting on the cooling weather not providing ideal conditions for fast times, the national kilo champion said: "Coming into May, the temperature starts dropping off rapidly, and so do your times." However, in the absence of previous world champion Shane Kelly (Vic), Kersten needs to face stiffer competition if he's to be competitive for the upcoming World Championships and the 2004 Olympic Games, something Kersten acknowledges. "He [Kelly] would have been going well, and I'm disappointed for him and myself that I didn't get to compete with him because I know there would have only been a hundredth of a second between us." Men U19 1k Time TrialPerkins feeling rather perkyAlready the first-crowned national champion of this year's track championships after winning the Flying 200, Shane Perkins (Vic) laid down his cards once again today, posting a blistering time of 1.05.635 to take out his second victory in as many attempts, this time the 1k Time Trial. "Given that it's my first year as an under 19, I'm more than happy how things have gone so far," said the stocky lad from Victoria. "In both events [Sprint and Time Trial], you need the top end speed, so they're not as hard to target as they seem," added Perkins when questioned about the difficulty in focusing for two seemingly different track disciplines. Well, it's easy for Perkins, anyway. PhotosImages by Tom Balks/www.tombalks.com Men U19 1k Time Trial
