Boulder - Roubaix Road Race

This year's Boulder Roubaix Road Race saw yet another revised course from the previous year. The course offered a bit more asphalt than past additions, but it would be the dirt sections that would have the most impact on the outcome.

The first serious attack came from Danny Pate of Prime Alliance, about 20 miles into the race. One lap (17 miles) later Mercury's Stoyanov went off in pursuit of Pate with one other rider, Aussie MTB rider Paul Rowney. Pate was eventually caught by the two chasers, and this would end up being the winning move.

Back in the chase group, the 7-UP team was the only one willing and able to take up the chase. 7-UP were unsuccessful in their chase efforts, but with one lap remaining, the lead trio had only a 15 second lead on a blown-apart chase group that included Mercury's Chris Wherry, Candelario of Prime Alliance, local Mountain biker, Jeremy Horgan of Polo Sport, and Todd Wells of Mongoose. The two groups never made contact as neither Wherry nor Candelario were willing to chase back their own teammate, and both riders were more than comfortable with the situation up the road.

In the front group, all the work was being done by Stoyanov and Rowney, as Pate could only sit on after being out front nearly all day. With about one kilometre to go, there was a nasty transition from dirt to gravel and then to pavement - a narrow downhill corkscrew with a sharp right hand turn at the bottom.

Pate decided to lead through this section and it proved to be the winning choice. Both Rowney and Stoyanov went down at the same time. Stoyanov quickly remounted and nearly caught Pate by the finish, but came up a just a few yards short.
