Malenkovch beats the blokes
Professional mountain biker Kyia Malenkovich of St. Cloud, MN, took on the Minnesota road opener on Saturday April 6th, 2002, winning both the Women's division, and the CAT IV/V men's race.
Malenkovich was assisted by teammate Stephanie Leibke (Moats) of Shoreview, MN, who finished in a solid second place in the Women's division a few minutes behind Malenkovich.
Malenkovich and Leibke attacked early in the 17 mile mixed pavement race on a section of packed gravel, splintering the field. Malenkovich then worked with a male rider in a 14 mile break, dropping her companion on a climb 2 miles from the finish, and winning by about 45 seconds.
