Wellsy wins

By Peter Winton

As I said recently, the star of our 2002 summer has returned recently and is looking dangerous. Usually he just looks "scary", na, sorry Damian you're just a push-over really.

Damian Wells, that mountain bike rider-cum-roadie is a powerful rider and he demonstrated that attribute to those lucky enough to be in his bunch last night. Admittedly he did have an easy handicap for a bloke of his speed and strength but hey, I had the pleasure of sticking to, or falling off the back, of Team Bust (USA) formerly known as Cannondale. And I can tell you 42.6kms/hr average over 30 kilometres is not the same as a beer drinking race!

Wellsy, you winner you!

Those in awe included Richard Hale and Arthur Anderson along with Dion Basse-Anstee, who held onto his lunch this time, Barry Pollock and Adrian Lloyd.

A novel approach to our regular TT's on Tuesday with the pairings making it an even challenge and the race times would support that contention.

Lovely bit of work also by the Mildura Rural City Council with a fresh layer of bitumen and 7mm gravel over 2kms of this race circuit. It certainly made for smoother riding, pity about some of the road shoulders still.

In the seasonal tallies it is Kevin Tankard in A grade on 212 points from Rob McNally on 166. In B grade there is a change of leader, Brendan Liddle on 163 pts from Peter Winton at 157, yes ok there will be a handover of a jersey. In C grade, Curlwaa's best cyclist Dion Basse-Anstee, has held a commanding lead all summer with a tally of 163, his nearest rival Adrian Lloyd on 55.

Some interesting races coming up in which the killer Bees leader(s) may yet see more changes.

Stay tuned for the next exciting episode in Mildura's cycling capers.
