Trek Bikes Summer Series Rd 8

Heffron Park, 25 February, 2003

By John Sunde

C Grade strongman Craig Dempsey claimed his second outright win in as many weeks when C grade once again held off an almost disinterested A and B grade bunch, this week by a considerable 400m margin. The win now catapults Easts rider Dempsey into 2nd equal on 14pts, 2 pts behind Series leader Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello). Dempsey already leads the separate C grade competition by an unbeatable 22pts after winning C grade 7 times from 7 starts and must surely now be ready for a start in B grade.

The A/B grade Sprint King competition also has a clear cut leader after 8 weeks with Randwick Botany junior Robbie Cater well clear of the field on 69pts although he now seems to be in his own private race as he shadows team mate Chris Jenkins everytime Spongee so much as moves a muscle.

With only four weeks of racing left before daylight saving ends, the race for the 1st prize of a Trek 5500 carbon frame is still wide open although A grade will need to show a lot more commitment if they are going to reel in a fired up C grade which once again boasted over 35 riders. 90 riders started tonight's race which included a contingent of 12 Korean track cyclists many who now seem to have gotten the hang of the circuit after previous visits to Sydney.

The racing pattern was similar to recent weeks when A grade caught a completely uncooperative B grade after only 8 laps, however this week it was obvious C grade weren't waiting around to get caught on the last lap. With British time triallist Stuart Dangerfield sitting on the sidelines with a sore throat, it was left to another big motor Stuart 'Computer' Campbell to go for the huge solo effort with 2 to go in an attempt to grab the enevelope for the single place left.

It almost came off, but an equally huge last lap effort from Anthony Spurgeon and Liam Kelly gave Jono Davis the perfect platform to launch an impressive sprint to get the envelope for 1st A grade. Robbie Cater was one of only a handful of B grade riders to finish and comfortably picked up the envelope for 1st B Grade.
