Turnbull turns the screw

A good size field of 39 riders had near perfect conditions for the 27.5km handicap last Sunday. The handicapper had his job cut out for him in placing the riders in one of seven bunches. As usual the middle bunches were quite congested.

Alan McClelland set off first and the 8 minute bunch that started 2 minutes behind didn’t catch him till half race distance. At the end of the first half lap the bunches were still approximately the same time apart as when they started.

By mid race distance it was very evident that the 6 minute bunch was looking like the possible winners. They were only 30 seconds behind the combined 8 & 10 minute bunches and had increased the 1 minute back to the chasing 5 minute bunch by 22 seconds.

With ten riders in the 6 minute bunch there were quite a few willing workers. By half race distance Phil Jones, Marcus Arnold, Scott Turnbull, Mal Moss and Pat Delahunty were doing the lion’ share of the work.

At the start of the 3rd lap the 6, 8 & 10 minute bunches combined. Sally Watts from the 8 minute bunch had ridden strongly before her bunch was caught and continued to do so after the bunches combined. On the final lap the 2 & 3 minute bunches combined and had pulled away from the 3 riders on the 1 minute mark. Mark Wall was doing some big turns which was stopping Brendan Cato, who started 1 minute behind from catching them. At the end of the race he was only 16 seconds adrift. Cato recorded the fastest time of 38:50, the 3rd fastest time ever for the race distance. In 2001 he rode off scratch with Jono Hall and rode 37:44, Hall set the course record on that day of 37:24.

There were eleven riders from the 6 & 8 minute bunches up for the sprint finish. In a very quick finish the result was Turnbull, Moss, Jones, Peter Kelly, Watts, Paul Kaye and Alvin Coehlo.

Next week’s race is a criterium at Albion Park. Races will start at 8am so the bunch will leave Wollongong at 7am.
