Nerang Qld, May 26 2002

Winter must be coming to the Gold Coast. The skies are getting bluer and the mornings are getting colder. Brisk temperatures to start the day on Sunday, but terrific racing conditions.

The A Grade bunch was smaller than usual, and after three laps it was down to only five riders, as the pace was on from the gun. Getting dropped so soon in the race was obviously not to the liking of most, as all but master's rider Mike Griffen pulled out within the first ten minutes. Seems like A Grade is a good place to be, provided there is a wheel to follow.

Despite numerous attacks and a couple of small breaks throughout the race, the A Grade survivors were still together at three to go, at which time Hamish Brown put it all on the line and went for it. His lead was never more than 100 to 150 metres, but he wouldn't give up, and he managed to "fall" across the line less than a bike length clear of fast finishing Jamie Seip.

Ed Raben from the Ipswich club has been prominent in B Grade in recent weeks, with a second at Burleigh and a strong win at the Darlington Park Kermesse last Sunday. This week he was in attacking mode once again, getting involved in minor breaks during the race, going solo with 15 minutes to go, and when he was caught he hit the bunch hard at the top of the finishing straight to win clearly. Looks like A Grade for Ed next ride!

John "Stretch" Mildenhall was fastest in the bunch sprint in C Grade, Keith Bremner made it two in a row in D Grade, while Under 15 rider Byron Davis took out E Grade.

A new innovation this week was a "Geriatrics Unlimited" race for Masters seven and eight riders on the short, flat circuit used by E Grade. Strongest and fastest on the day was Merv McDonald, from Stan James and Pat O'Brien.

For the second week in a row, another big congratulations to CATS rider Robbie McEwen for his outstanding Stage 10 victory in the Giro. Now bring on the Tour!
