Gold Coast CATS CC Kermesse

Darlington Park, Qld, May 19, 2002

Darlington Park was the venue for racing this Sunday with the club's first kermesse for the season on the tough four kilometre circuit. As all riders found, the hill hasn't got any easier since last year!

A Grade numbers were down due to an Open race on the same day, so they raced with the B Grade bunch, but for separate prizemoney. Surprisingly it was the B Graders who showed the first signs of aggression, but it wasn't long before John Kane was on the attack, accompanied by Chris Selden. They were brought back by the now reduced bunch, but when Kane, Selden, Andrew Mcphan and Master's rider extraordinaire Mike (Griffo) Griffen made a move with 15 minutes to go, they were away for good.

If the circuit is not hard enough by itself, the finish really tops it off, coming just over the top of the climb, and as the riders came into view it was John Kane giving it his all to win clearly from Selden and McPhan. Griffo completed a great ride, just off the back of the leading trio.

From about the half way point the B Graders were scattered all over the circuit, and at the finish the "bunch" comprised only Ipswich rider Ed Raben and triathlete Anthony Parish. Raben was too strong up the hill the last time, winning from Parish, with Matt Wood battling on gamely for third.

The C Graders were the only group to stay relatively intact for the entire race, with Paul Hill winning the only bunch sprint of the day from fast finishing Denis Cain and Brian Meade. Keith Bremner looked strongest throughout the D Grade race and proved this at the finish, winning from Gary Harper and Lee Wilde, with Gail Zinn in fourth place after working hard throughout the race.

Finally, congratulations to CATS member Robbie McEwen for his brilliant win in stage four of the Giro. It just shows the benefit of racing at Burleigh Worlds!

Racing next Sunday May 26 is at Nerang, start time 7:30 am. For information on CATS Club racing visit the Club's website at www.goldcoastcats.com
