With 173 entries from as far away as Tasmania the race was always going to be tough. The first of the ten groups left at 10:00am from Dapto High on their 90km journey around the roads of Avondale and Calderwood, with the last group "the scratchies" leaving 30 minutes later. With some unusual handicapping, many of the outer bunches split up quickly and produced larger groups. Some were dropped from their initial groups in the early stages, but joined faster groups and were seen to be driving them back up to their original groups. An early fall disrupted the block bunch, putting an end to any dreams of staying away from the "scratchies". By half way a Randwick Bottany's Aaron Castle and Northern Sydney's Ross Hodgson had broken away from the combined front groups. The pair got into a rhythm and gradually increased the gap between themselves and their fellow limit markers. At the same time the group behind was growing as others joined, but the pair continued to build on their lead, whilst the scratch markers had collected the bunch in front and were mowing down the rest of the back markers. By the start of the third lap Castle and Hodgson were still riding strongly and increasing the gap to the chasing group made up of the remnants of the first five groups, whilst the back markers were still 11 minutes behind. The "scratchies" saw that getting up was going to take a major effort, but finding takers to sacrifice themselves for the rest of the group cost a lot of time. A number of attacks went off the front of the group, but they were brought back and the bunch sat up again. As Castle and Hodgson were cresting Marshall Mount, the scratchies were still at the railway bridge, almost 5km behind. As they got to the top of Hooker Hill for the final time, Castle cramped up and lost contact with Hodgson who continued on to take the win with a minute gap over Castle who had recovered to take second. This is the second year in a row that a North Sydney rider has slipped under the handicapper's guard to win the Dinnerville, even with a change of handicapper. The rest of the places went to the next bunch, two minutes behind led in by St George's Dennis Fahey and the first Illawarra club member Mark Davis. Fastest time was won by St George's Dan Smith, who took out the scratch bunch sprint from under 19 Victorian rider Jonathan Clarke. Apart from a large number of fines handed out by the Comissaires, things are looking good for next year.
