The 17th annual Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge kicks off in Boise, Idaho on June 18th. The powerhouse field, featuring five of the past six years' champions - Clara Hughes, Anna Wilson, Dede Demet-Barry, Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli, and Rasa Polikeviciute - will battle for domination over the 625 mile, eleven- day, eleven-stage race.

Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Office Depot) will be seeking a repeat of her 1999 victory, but Mari Holden, 2nd in last year's race, and backed by a strong Timex team, will certainly be gunning for Longo-Ciprelli's title. In addition, Saturn is jam-packed with talent, with three of the last six HP champions (Demet-Barry, Hughes, and Wilson) donning Saturn jersies. Other strong contenders for the overall include Timex rider Tracey Gaudry, and the never to be discounted Lithuanian faction of Rasa Polikeviciute, Jolanta Polikeviciute, and Diana Ziliute, all of whom are riding for the same composite team, HP European.

Many Olympic selection committees will be watching this race closely, so expect an aggressive, high-powered race.

Stage 1 is the Birds of Prey to Idaho City Road Race. This 111 km (69.5 mile) stage features a 256 meter (840 feet) climb at 4.4% grade, and the first Queen of the Mountain competition. Typically, this race has been decided in a field sprint. Anna Wilson has been the victor in this stage for the past 2 years.

Stage 2 is the Lowman to Stanley Road Race, a 93.6 km (58.5 mile) leg-burner. The riders will climb to Banner Creek Summit, and the 567 meter (1860 feet), 5% grade should favor the pure climbers of the group. Last year, Longo-Ciprelli broke away on the climb and rode to a solo victory, capturing both the stage win and the leader's jersey.

Stage 3, the Elkhorn Circuit Race held at Elkhorn Resort in Sun Valley, will require the riders to navigate a 2.56 km (1.6 mile) course eighteen times. Each lap includes a short 6.6% grade, adding up to a whopping 768 meters (2,520 feet) over the 46.1 km (28.8 mile) course.

Stage 4 is the Rupert to Pomerelle Road Race, and a chance for the climbers to not only make, but conquer, the grade. The grade, in this case, is a 5% climb of 235 meters (770 feet) with Queen of the Mountain points at the 75.8 km (47.4 mile) mark. It doesn't end there, though. This stage features a mountaintop finish after a punishing 6%, 616 meter (2,020 feet) ascent.

Stage 5 is a flat, out-and-back individual time trial in Burley. This race will cover 24 km (15 miles) with riders leaving at 1 minute increments, except for the last ten riders who will take off at 2 minute intervals.

Stage 6, and it's back on the road from Burley to Buhl. This 135 km (84.2 mile) race is traditionally very fast and features one climb. Last year, residents of Buhl, the self-proclaimed "trout capital of the world" treated ravenous cyclists to an outdoor trout feed.

Stage 7 is the Twin Falls to Glenns Ferry Road Race, and the 123 km (76.7 mile) stage will test both the mettle of the sprinters and the climbers alike as mountain and sprint points are scattered liberally throughout the course.

Stage 8, the Letha to Firebird Road Race, is one of two courses in this year's race designed to emulate conditions and terrain racers are likely to encounter in Sydney. Although it's unlikely that any HP racer will be fooled into thinking she's actually racing for Olympic Gold in Sydney rather than completing Stage 8 in the HP Women's Challenge, it's a brilliant effort by the race directors to meet the needs of its cyclists. The race finishes on an automobile raceway.

Stage 9 is the Race to the Base Road Race. The "base" in this case is Mountain Home Air Force Base. Most likely battled in the desert heat, this stage also features a multitude of sprint and mountain point opportunities. The finish will be contested on the Air Force Base jetway.

Stage 10 is always fast, the Idaho Statehouse Criterium. This flat stage favors the sprinters, and they are out in force at HP this year. Look for Petra Rossner (Saturn) - definitely on top of her form, and straight off a win in Philly - to flex her fast-twitch fibers now that she's clear of the mountains.

Stage 11 is the final stage, and the Middleton to Hyde Park Road Race, featuring one 5% 152 meter (500 feet) ascent, finishes fast and flat in the historic Hyde Park district in Boise.
