In a stunning display of teamwork and strategy, Saturn launched Anna Wilson into first place overall in the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge. Saturn went from the gun, setting an insanely fast pace only a few could follow. During the first few laps, a break of five riders - Anna Wilson (Saturn), Sarah Ulmer (Elita), Dede Demet Barry (Saturn), Julie Young (Autotrader.com) and Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (German National) - established a gap, and with Petra Rossner blocking from the front of the main field, it was the last the group saw of Anna Wilson and company. That is, until the break lapped the field that included both Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Office Depot) and Diana Ziliute (HP European) with approximately 15 laps to go. Almost as soon as the break caught the main group, Saturn began working Wilson back up to the front to put her in position for the sprint. Her teammates did their job, and Wilson did not disappoint. Wilson won the sprint, taking the stage victory, as well as establishing a 27 second lead over former race leader Ziliute. "I'm numb with excitement," said a beaming Wilson after the race. "It was our strategy the whole week. The first four days were so hilly we just wanted to try to stay in touch with the leader, and we knew [going into today's stage] one lap in the crit would be enough." With one stage left in the race, Wilson is placing her confidence in her team. Tomorrow's stage has one climb that, according to Wilson, poses the only "danger point." Even that doesn't have her too worried. " I know the whole Saturn team will be around me, and if we have to do a team time trial to the finish, that's what we'll do." Normally, the last stage of a major tour isn't really a "racing stage," but in this Women's Challenge, all the teams have been racing hard from the first day, and it's doubtful Ziliute's HP European team will let this hard knock to its race leader go unanswered. According to Ziliute, "My hands aren't falling off yet, so we'll see what we can do." Tomorrow's stage takes racers from Middleton to Hyde Park, an historic district in Boise, Idaho. It's a relatively short 88.3 km (55.2 mile) course, but it does have one climb and two sprints - one of which is for a time bonus.
