17th Hewlett Packard LaserJet International Women's Challenge - 2.9.1USA, June 8- 18, 2000Main Page Results Previous stage Rider reportsStage 8 - June 15: Payette Valley - Firebird Raceway Road Race, 79.4 mi/127 kmSaturn refuse to give inBy Michelle Witter, cyclingnews.com correspondent All sorts of excitement in Stage eight of the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge, but in the end, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (German National) outsprinted her breakaway companions for the win The Letha to Firebird Raceway circuit race was designed to emulate conditions riders are likely to face at the Sydney Olympic Games. The rode three times around a circuit, facing a fairly significant climb each lap, before jetting off in another direction and up another hard, but (arguably) short, ascent. Then a downhill to flat section brought the riders into Firebird Raceway - a drag race track - and around the track to the finish. Racers racked up a total of 127 km (79.4 miles) on another windy day. On the first Queen of the Mountain climb, several riders took the lead, including Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli (Office Depot), Anna Wilson (Saturn), Mari Holden (Timex), Sarah Ulmer (Elita), Jolanta Polikeviciute (HP European), and Diana Ziliute (HP European). The group established a small gap on the field, but it came back, as there was no concerted effort on the part of the riders to stay away. Almost as soon as the group was reeled back, however, another break went at the 12 km (9.5 mile) mark. It contained a potent collection of 14 riders, with nearly every major team represented. It included Zita Urbonaite (HP European), Juanita Feldhahn (Jayco Australia), Tracey Gaudry (Timex), Clara Hughes (Saturn), Petra Rossner (Saturn), Dede Demet Barry (Saturn), Sarah Ulmer (Elita), Karen Kurreck (US National), Lara Ruthven (US National), Ceris Gilfillan (British National), Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (German National), and Vera Hohlfeld (German National), Pam Schuster (Autotrader.com), and Andrea Ratkovic (Autotrader.com). The group quickly gained time on the peloton, stretching its lead to nearly four minutes. Everyone in the break worked together smoothly, with the exception of Gaudry, Hohlfeld, and Urbonaite. Gaudry was forced to sit on because many of the riders in the break jeopardized her teammates' GC standings, and Urbonaite was Ziliute's watchdog in the break. Urbonaite stayed with the group for approximately two laps before dropping back to assist Ziliute and the Polikeviciutes (HP European) in the chase. With 20 km to go, Gaudry launched an attack that stuck, gaining over 30 seconds on the group and riding solo up the last climb. It was a valiant effort, and she set a blistering pace. However, on the descent, the group's chase efforts were aided by a strong tailwind and she was caught. Gaudry rode the final 2 km into the racetrack with the group. Once inside the raceway, Demet Barry attacked, followed by Gaudry on her wheel. They had a small gap before Teutenberg decided to close it down, and, in the process, propelled herself across the finish line ahead of Gaudry, 2nd place, and Demet Barry, third. Teutenberg was very happy with the win, and was smiling when she said," I don't want to be in a break again: it's too hard." The stage leaders waited an additional 3:59 for the chase group that included the three leaders on GC - Longo-Ciprelli, Anna Wilson (Saturn), and Ziliute - who were obviously obsessed with one anothers' wheels. While there were no shake-ups in the top-three overall, there were significant changes underneath the leaders. Anna Wilson called the day a great one for the Saturn team. What made it so special? "We were able to make the Lithuanians panic and they worked really hard for 70 km. Hopefully, they'll be really tired." Tomorrow, Saturn plans to capitalize on what it hopes is Ziliute's exhaustion. "Our team is riding so well in the wind right now," she said. "It's not bothering us." Gaudry, who wasn't feeling well coming into the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge, is starting to feel better, and the beleaguered Timex team will certainly be seeking a stage win during one of the remaining three days. Mari Holden (Timex) dropped to 16th in GC after today's stage. Holden, who recently battled a bronchial ailment, is now experiencing intestinal problems, vomiting during today's stage. (The very polite Holden dropped to the back of the pack in order to do so.) Three riders failed to finish the stage, and one racer did not show at the start, bringing the expected starters for tomorrow's Mountain Home Road Race stage to 91, down from 116 at the beginning of the tour. Tomorrow's stage is a 114.4 km (71.5 mile) road race.
