17th Hewlett Packard LaserJet International Women's Challenge - 2.9.1USA, June 8- 18, 2000Main Page Results Previous stage Rider reportsStage 4 - June 11: Rupert - Pomerelle Road Race, 56.4 mi/90.2 kmLongo best in the hills againBy Michelle Witter, cyclingnews.com correspondent Jeannie Longo-Ciprelli cruised to a mountaintop victory in Stage 4 of the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge, Rupert to Pomerelle Road Race. According to Longo-Ciprelli, the pack was nervous during the initial flat kilometers, but she was able to stay out of trouble with the help of her Office Depot teammates. Others were not so lucky, however, and a crash occuring within the first half of the stage ended Tina Liebig's (German National) run at the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge. Also involved, Karen Dunne (Elita), yesterday's sprint champion, who went on to finish her race, and Naomi Williams (Australia), who, although hurt, insisted she be able to finish the stage. She did so, coming in 43:12 behind Longo- Ciprelli and straight into the arms of medical personnel. Unfortunately for Williams, whose first words to the medics after her crash were, "I want to finish the race," this stage will be her last, as she failed to make the time cut. The crash produced the only adrenaline in the first segment of the race with the real action commencing at the base of the climb to Pomerelle Ski Resort. It was no surprise when Longo-Ciprelli accelerated away from the pack - it was a move the entire peleton knew she would make. However, only Jolanta Polikeviciute (HP European) could respond pedal- stroke for pedal-stroke. As she took Longo-Ciprelli's wheel, she looked for her team leader, Ziliute, and, seeing Ziliute struggling to make the break, Polikeviciute dropped back to pace Ziliute back up to Longo- Ciprelli. Longo-Ciprelli would have none of that, and she poured on the juice up the long switchback climb. At times, the grade was 7-8%, but she cruised up the ascent at a pace that left only frustrated chasers and open-mouthed onlookers in her wake. By the time she had 2 km left to go, she'd put 2:10 on the chasers. After she crossed the finish line, smiling, she waited 2:44 for her next-closest competitor to enter the ski resort parking lot. Clearly, it was a good day for Longo, who also received a 10 second time bonus for winning the stage. "I'm happy," she said, "really happy." Less thrilled with the outcome is Ziliute who, although she still retains the blue leader's jersey, now finds Longo-Ciprelli only 23 seconds down in GC - a less than comfortable lead, particularly on the eve of a time trial. Ziliute has said that Longo-Ciprelli is a "born genius," and that a racer like Longo-Ciprelli comes along only once a century. Longo-Ciprelli, however, claims no overwhelming confidence in her ability to unseat Ziliute from place atop the overall standings. "There are many stages left, and Diana is a good time trialist." She believes the flat 24 k (15 mile) course will favor another type of rider, possibly. "I am a small person. Tomorrow the time trial will be better for the big power-girls." At the awards ceremony, Longo-Ciprelli was awarded the mountain jersey, the leader's jersey, the "best senior rider" jersey, and the points- leader jersey. When Ceris Gilfillan (British National) arrived on the podium to receive her "best young rider" jersey, Longo-Ciprelli quipped, "I want that one." A team manager was overheard saying, "That's probably the only one she can't have." She may not be unstoppable, but she's certainly a force with which to be reckoned.
