And win she did, breaking the course record for the first stage of the Hewlett-Packard LaserJet Women's Challenge in the process. The stage began in gloomy, windy weather with the sky threatening rain. Shortly after the racers moved through the neutral start, the rain began to fall. There were a few crashes as the rain made the oil-soaked pavement as slick as black ice in places, but the downed riders were able to make it back to the main group. Almost as soon as the rain ended, the attacks started in earnest. With strong crosswinds on the flat desert sections of the course, a group of riders saw the opportunity to make time on the field, and they took it. Very early on, 10 riders escaped, and the group included Diana Ziliute (HP European), Rasa Polikeviciute (HP European), Ina-Yoko Teutenberg (German National) Clara Hughes (Saturn), Anna Wilson (Saturn), Lara Ruthven (U.S. National Team), Kim Smith (Timex), Pam Schuster (Autotrader.com), along with Megan Hughes and Ceris Gilfillan, both of the British National Team. It was a strong, powerful break, and it quickly gained time on the field. At one point, Longo-Ciprelli went to the front of the chase group in an effort to reel in the break, but she had no real help, and the break continued to build on its lead. The only notable climb in the race was a 256 meter (840 feet) ascent with a 4.4% grade, and the break made more time on the pack up the climb, finishing the section with almost a three minute advantage. From there, it was smooth sailing to the finish, but as the group turned the final corner for the sprint, Polikeviciute hit the pavement, and Anna Wilson gunned it down the finishing stretch, finishing just ahead of Ziliute. Teutenberg finished third. Polikeviciute, with a bad case of road rash, took a long, slow walk to the finish line, even managing to smile at encouraging spectators. She was given the same time as the leaders. Wilson's time of 2:46:16 broke her own course record of 2:53:20, as she averaged 40.41 km/h for the stage.
