Longo-Ciprelli’s effort - 31:44 over 24 km (15 miles) of flat farmland - gives her a six second lead in the GC over Diana Ziliute (HP European). Ziliute covered the distance in 32:12, putting her in fourth place in today’s stage, and second place in the overall standings. Mari Holden (Timex), who is recovering from a bronchial illness, was not far behind Longo-Ciprelli, posting a time of 31:50. Holden was happy with her result, but joked that she would have liked a time "about eight seconds faster." Holden is glad to see some success in this race. She missed the break in the first stage, and has been very active in the stages since; however, the return on her efforts has been disappointing, perhaps due to her recent illness. Holden’s teammate, Kim Smith, is currently sitting fourth in GC, while Holden is fifth. Holden says she is looking forward to supporting Smith, who has selflessly worked for Holden in the past. "I owe her one," said Holden. Anna Wilson (Saturn) rode to a third place with a time of 32:07. She is now third overall and 1:33 down on Longo-Ciprelli. Her teammates, Dede Demet-Barry, Lyne Bessette, and Clara Hughes, came in fifth, seventh, and eighth, respectively. Saturn’s potential firepower cannot be underestimated as the racers enter the second half of this year’s Women’s Challenge. Each remaining stage will undoubtedly be extremely tactical, and tight team strategy and execution will be mandatory. This is what worries Longo-Ciprelli. Her composite team, Office Depot, includes Sue Latshaw (USA), Jen Dial (USA), Karine Dalmais (FRA), Roz Reekie-May (NZL), and Melanie McQuaid (CAN). Earlier in the race, Longo-Ciprelli expressed concern that she does not have "a team she can trust," and that her team "is a small team." Actually, Ziliute’s team, HP European, is now smaller than Longo-Ciprelli’s, as French rider Marion Clignet did not show for today’s stage. Still, Ziliute has plenty of support from Zita Urbonaite (Ltu), as well as Rasa and Jolanta Polikeviciute (Ltu). Further down in the standings, but significant nevertheless, Naomi Williams (Jayco Australia), who fought bravely to finish yesterday’s stage after sustaining some nasty injuries in a crash, had been time cut yesterday and was told she would not be allowed to start today’s stage. After her team protested, she was given permission to start today. A still-bandaged Williams finished the time trial in 37:56. In a similar story of bravery, Karen Timewell (Can) riding for Boise Cascade Office Products, went down in a crash 5 km into stage two, the Lowman to Stanley Road Race. Timewell remounted her bike and managed to climb all the way to Banner Summit and finish the race, doing so with a fractured elbow. Timewell did drop out after the stage, but is staying on to help her teammates.
