Ivan Basso

Ivan Basso is back to racing after a forced rest of two years due to his involvement in Operación Puerto. The Italian, winner of the 2006 Giro d'Italia, looks to set the records straight and prove himself stronger than before while giving Cyclingnews' readers an inside look at his training and racing.

Andy Schleck

Just 23 years of age, Andy Schleck made a name for himself during the 2007 Giro d'Italia when he won the best young rider classification. The Luxembourger continued to impress in 2008, when he took the same jersey at the Tour de France while helping his squad to win the teams and general classification.

The cycling world is expecting more big things from Schleck in 2009, and he'll be keeping you informed of his progress throughout the year on Cyclingnews.

Rory Sutherland

Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjå

Norwegian cross-country mountain bike racer Gunn-Rita Dahle Flesjå won the Madrid, Spain, round of the UCI World Cup and the UCI Marathon World Championships in 2008, but will take on a new challenge in 2009 when she gives birth to her first child, expected in late March.

USWCDP

The US Women's Cycling Development program was founded by former pro rider, Michael Engleman, as a way to help promising young women cyclists reach their full potential as athletes.

With experienced mentors along with current pros, the USWCDP helps young riders to race better, find teams and become professional bike racers. The dedicated and well spoken women of this program provide thoughtful, compelling and sometimes hilarious anecdotes of their experiences in this diary.

Eva Lutz

Eva Lutz is a fiery German who rides for Equipe Nürnberger Versicherung. She is off to her best season start ever, having won the second stage of the Ladies' Tour of Qatar, and bringing in third and fourth places respectively in the Gran Premio Brissago - Lago Maggiore and the Trofeo Alfredo Binda.

In her spare time, Lutz is studying for an advanced degree in mechanical engineering. This year she has shed the bright red dreadlocks for which she became known, going back to her natural brown curls. She will share her unique view of women's professional cycling with us over the season.

Cameron Jennings

Cameron Jennings is back home, racing in 2009 for the Budget Forklift team. Jennings did well in 2008, but with the new team he hopes to do even more damage in the races in 2009.

Jennings will continue to write a diary for Cyclingnews and describe his experiences racing as a professional in all parts of the world.

Torq Team

The UCI-registered Australian TORQ/VIS mountain bike team team, features some of Australia's top racers and future stars, including VIS scholarship recipients Tory Thomas, Robbie Hucker, and Cal Britton, Olympian Dan McConnell, and James Maebus, Katherine O'Shea, Joanna Wall, Luke Fetch, Steele von Hoff and Paul Weymouth.

TORQ racers are targeting the Australian MTB National Series, National Championships and Oceania Continental Championships. Some members will head abroad for the World Cups – an important part of Australian national team selection process for the 2009 World Championships to be held in Canberra, Australia. They take turns sharing their experience in this diary.

Rochelle Gilmore

Rochelle Gilmore will race for the Lotto-Belisol team in 2009. Splitting her time between the road circuit and the track World Cup, this quick sprinter won a stage at the Geelong Women's Tour, took second in the Commonwealth Games points race, and earned top five finishes in a Giro d'Italia stage, the Geelong Women's World Cup, and the Liberty Classic. She also won a stage in the Route de France Féminine in 2007.

Barbara Howe

Just as Barbarella bumps through the universe, comically oblivious to the dangers and threats being thrust at her, Barbara Howe has had a few misadventures of her own. After an illness-filled season in 2006, and a grievous injury in late 2007 she is working to get her fitness back by 2009.

Although 'cross is still the favorite discipline of the California resident, she has been known to ride her mountain bike in the mountains for hours on end. She currently resides in Berkeley, California with her cat and eight bikes.

Christoph Sauser (2009 - present) Index

Last summer, Christoph Sauser fulfilled a long-time dream when he became the mountain bike cross country World Champion. The 33-year-old Swiss rider of Team Specialized Factory Racing is racing in the rainbow stripes as he works toward a goal of defending his championship title in Canberra, Australia.

Going into the 2009 season, Sauser counted 14 UCI World Cup wins, and he has twice been the World Cup overall champion - in 2004 & 2005. He can go fast over long distances, too. Sauser won the mountain bike marathon World Championships in 2007 and finished as the runner-up in 2008.

Follow Sauser's travels around the globe as he races the World Cup cross country circuit and some marathon and stage races throughout 2009.

Geoff_KabushThe Geoff Kabush diary (2004 - present): Index

A born and bred Canadian, Geoff Kabush, is known for racing his bike fast and having fun. He races mountain bikes, cyclo-cross, sometimes road and is flying the Team Maxxis-Rocky Mountain banner in 2009. After playing every sport in high school, Kabush decided to take racing seriously after attending his first Mountain Bike World Championship as a junior in 1995. Attending the University of Victoria and studying engineering he slowly moved through the ranks until a breakthrough in 2000 saw him representing Canada at the Sydney Olympics. After consistently being on the podium for several years, it wasn't until 2004 and a switch to Team Maxxis that the wins started piling up.

Euro 'Cross Camp diary Index - Latest

For its sixth consecutive year, the Euro 'Cross Camp will travel to Izegem, Belgium for two weeks from December 20, 2008 to January 3, 2009, with some of America's most promising cyclo-cross talent. Euro 'Cross Camp Director and US National Team Coach Geoff Proctor selected 19 male riders to take on some of the toughest courses and strongest riders abroad and to prepare for the World Championships in late January.

The camp has helped the careers of racers like current US National Champion Ryan Trebon, Jeremy Powers and Jamey Driscoll. Read these diaries for hints of who may emerge from this year's crop of three elite, eight U23 and eight junior racers as America's future 'cross stars. Coach Proctor and his riders will take turns contributing diary entries.
