Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Randwick-Botany CCHeffron Park, Maroubra, March 29, 2003Almost a century at HeffronBy Tony Horneman Almost 100 junior and senior riders registered for racing at the weekly Randwick Botany Cycling Club criterium races at Heffron Park on March 29, 2003. Racing was halted by the race commissarie, for a short time after 3 laps due to a fall in D-Grade. After several rolling laps to keep the muscles warm, the race was restarted and all riders quickly resumed full race pace. In-form A-Grade riders Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello), Shaun Higgerson, Robert Cater, Patrick Jones, and Simon Price (Hobart Wheelers) took the placings in the elite race. Randwick Botany's Will Grey had a good ride, driving the bunch on several occasions. Randwick Botany's Dave Jackson, sporting a new set of Zipp composite rimmed wheels, set the pace in B-Grade. Michael Murdoch (big bird) made a break early but was chased down quickly. Final placings were Jonathon Tainsh (North Sydney), Chris Young (Eastern Suburbs), Ryan Terry (North Sydney) and David McHugh (Sydney). The Randwick Botany Cycling Club welcomed Dorothee Grun (and 4-year-old son Marcel), from the RC Guenther Koeln-Longerich cycling club in Koeln, Germany. Grun is visiting Australia for 7 weeks to train and prepare for the German National Championships later in the year. "The weather is very pleasant here in Australia, compared to back home," she said after the race. Grun joined 21 other C-Grade riders for a 28km race. New club member Alex Templeton tried her hand at C-Grade this week, and made some short breaks during the race. There was plenty of action in the C-Grade field. Final placing were Martin Snowden (Sutherland), Shaun Ballesty (Randwick Botany) and Kevin Black (North Sydney). A large D-Grade bunch (23 riders) raced for 20km. D-Grade star Phillip Chippendale did a lot of work keeping the other riders honest, and finished fourth for his efforts. Randwick Botany riders filled the first four places with Peter McDonald first after a solo breakaway, followed by Joe Henry, Andrew Young and Chippendale. Beth Bowen from the Sydney Cycling Club rode strongly and finished fifth. Junior riders competed in time trails and a 10km handicap race. Michael Murdoch recorded the quickest time for the day with a 3min 9sec 2km lap. Nine-year-old Elliot Doughty won the 10km Handicap for the second week running.
