Introduction to Track Racing - What's a Wheelrace? - Introduction to Six Day racing Tasmanian Christmas CarnivalsTasmania, December 23, 2006 - January 20, 2007Rosebery Carnival - December 23, 2006By Rod Morris in Rosebery Devonport rider John Rayner continued his good early season form with victory in the 50th annual Rosebery Wheelrace at the weekend. The revamped Rosebery Carnival went ahead in glorious sunshine, setting the scene for an exciting week of cycling action at the time-honoured Tasmanian Christmas Carnivals. Rayner won the PCCCT Wheelrace at the season-opening carnival in November and won the 1000m lightning handicap at George Town in early December before taking his excellent form to Tasmanias West Coast. Rayners win in the $1000 handicap wheelrace also elevated him to the lead on Tasmanias Order-of-Merit prize money table with some rich pickings now just around the corner. Rayner was an easy qualifier in his 2000m heat of the wheel and in a tight sprint finish outgunned Scottsdales Ben Grenda, Railtons Jason Bellchambers and Burnies Aaron Jones to claim the title. Earlier in the programme, Acacia Hills rider Daniel Jamieson won the 1000 m Lightning Handicap from West Australian youngster Jayden Veljacich and Aaron Jones (again!). Veljacich impressed when he won the B Grade Scratch with Devonports Matthew Kent winning the C Grade. The 8km A Grade Scratch saw Nathan Clarke win his third Rosebery title, outsprinting West Australian star Cameron Meyer with a healthy gap to the chasing bunch led home by Launcestons Tom Robinson. Meyer had better luck in the invitational elimination race, while the 4-lap derby was won by Scotlands Evan Oliphant. In womens racing, Launcestons Laura McCaughey dominated events, winning the wheelrace, lightning handicap and scratch race, while the only other female winner on the day was Penguins Sarah Cure in the B Grade Scratch. Junior wheelrace winners included Peter Loft (U17), Bradley Ryan (U15) and William McDonagh (U13). PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Lynne Ryan
