Australians smash World Record to win gold

Australia smashed its own world record on the way to winning gold at the world track cycling championships today. The quartet of Graeme Brown, Brett Lancaster, Luke Roberts and Peter Dawson clocked a stunning three minutes 57.280 seconds to beat Great Britain in the ride off for gold and silver.

The Australians' time was well inside the world record of 3:59.583 posted by Brown, Dawson, Roberts and Mark Renshaw at last year's Commonwealth Games in Manchester.

When it was suggested such a record, set in incredibly hot and humid conditions could stand for quite a while, the team said they were determined to break it again next year.

Brown said: "(Australian) sprint coach Martin Barras has done studies on it and he believes the Olympic championship will be won in 3:55." Brown said. "I told him he was an idiot when he first said it but now I think it's quite possible. Athens is fast and we're fast so put the two together and 3:55 is quite a possibility."

The team overcame a false start, in which Lancaster came off his bike, to lead their opponents after at each kilometre. British rider Bryan Steel pulled out after 2000m as Robert Hayles, Paul Manning and Bradley Wiggins continued on, the team posting an impressive time of 4:00.629.
