Women's 500m time trial

Natallia Tsylinskaya of Belarus won the women's 500m time trial in 34.838 ahead of defending champion Nancy Contereras Reyes of Mexico. Third place went to Kerrie Meares of Australia.

This was Tsylinskaya's second 500m gold medal, and if the name doesn't seem familiar, that's because she rode in 2000 under her married name Markovnichenko but is now single again. "It's easier to win a gold medal at the world championships than find a good husband," she told the Reuters news agency. Potential good husbands should presumably contact the Belarus Cycling Federation...

Australia's Kerrie Meares was overjoyed to join the "34 Club" and ride under 35 seconds for the first time, especially after she crashed during the warm up. Less than an hour before she was due to race, the tyre on her front disc wheel blew out.

"It was a bit of a plonk and slide but nothing too serious," said Meares. "It didn't really upset me because after seeing the Aussies race last night [when Australia claimed two gold, one silver and a bronze medal in three events] my initial nerves settled down and I was really focused.

"In fact I was looking forward too it because it's what I've been training for all year," said Meares who claimed gold in both the 500m event and the sprint at the Manchester Commonwealth Games and was the 2000 junior world 500m champion.
