The women's 5-mile race was an emotional victory for Becky Quinn (Quakertown, Pa.), whose win Friday night is her first career U.S. championship gold medal. Quinn's victory comes several months after she sustained a back injury during strength training. "My legs carried me to the finish, that's all I can say!" said a jubilant Quinn, who has also earned a berth on the 2002 World Track Cycling Championships with her win. "I came around the last turn, and there it was.

"I've had one goal in mind, and that was to win a national title," Quinn said. "They told me my back injury was season-ending, and that wasn't what I wanted to hear. And I didn't listen to the people who told me that. I've just dreamt about this [victory], and I knew I could do it. I've trained hard, and I was in the best shape I could have been for this event...I was the dark horse coming in, and that was good...nobody knew what I could do! And it all paid off."
