Tech at the 2003 Cyclocross Worlds

Cyclingnews tech-heads.
Newly crowned U/23 Cyclocross champ Enrico Franzoi powered his Pinarello
cyclocross rig to a great win. Pontoni's heir apparant was aboard this
bike for his win. Note the Campy record 10speed gearing and lightweight
Pinarello
Charisma carbon fibre wheels with Dugast hubs. This Pinarello cyclocross
bike isn't in their catalog as it's a special model made for Franzoi,
however Fausto Pinarello told Cyclingnews that this bike was a combination
of Deda U2 and Sc.61.110 tubing, weighing 1.2kg for the frame without
a fork. "We don't want this bike to be too light, as it could break
on the rough cyclocross courses," said Pinarello.

Gerben De Knegt's Colnago hadn't been fitted with his cyclocross wheels
when we took the photo. The Colnago Dream Cyclocross bike runs Rabobank
colors and is STI only, no trick underbar Empella cyclocross levers to
be found here.

Jan Ramsauer of Team Switzerland rides for the Saeco amateur squad in
Switzerland, and he brought two of these bikes to Monopoly. Aboard his
CAAD 5 cyclocross rig, Jan has Shimano Dura Ace and STI levers only; Ksyrium
wheels, Michelin tires, Selle Italia SLR saddle and Ritchey Bars, stem
and seatpost.

La Vie En Rose: Frenchman Andre Dugast is truly the last bastion of handmade
tubulars going; his cyclocross tires are works of art. Only a few top
riders at the Monopoli Cyclocross Worlds were sporting his newest high-tech
tub ouvre; a 280 gram, 32mm section silk (rather the normal 320 gram cotton
model) for lighter weight, Dugast has added puncture protection via reinforced
sidewall and a layer of cushioning gel between the "chappe"
(tread) and carcass. Cost? Mon Dieu!
