Tasmanian Road Series - Fred Keefe Memorial Race

Launceston, March 29, 2002

By Matthew Conn

West Tamar 16 year old, Tim Walker, made his first major impression in the senior cycling ranks by taking out the Fred Keefe memorial race, held on the outskirts of Launceston on Saturday.

Walker made full use of his handicap on the day and then rode a tactical race on the final of three testing laps around White Hills. With a chasing group in sight, the slightly built climber attacked his own bunch on the final climb where he was joined at the top by the strongest cyclists of chasing middle groups.

Josh Wilson, one of the pre race favourites, attacked the leading group of five on the flat run to the finish and was starting to build what looked like a race wining lead. Wilson was only caught in the closing kilometres after the following group, led by Steve Aitken, mounted an organised chase.

Inside the final kilometer, Walker attacked on a slight rise and managed to hold off the rest of the group to win by 4 seconds. Walker's West Tamar club mate, Wes Sulzberger, sprinted home for second place ahead of Darren Cook and Aitken.

Fastest time went to Karl Menzies who finished alone in front of his fellow scratchmen. The back markers were unable to make any serious inroads into the lead of the middle markers until the final lap of the tough circuit. Jason Belchambers took second place in Category 1, just out sprinting Ryan Sullivan on the line.

Earlier in the day, David Lyons, Ben Grenda and Tiffany Manion all scored victories in their respective junior age categories.
