Launceston CC - Jim Phillips Memorial

Bishopsbourne, April 5, 2003

By Matthew Conn

Wes Sulzberger sprinted home to a narrow victory in the Jim Phillips cycling race at Bishopsbourne on Saturday, and in doing so, made it three open wins from three races for West Tamar club juniors.

Sulzberger's win follows victories by Tim Walker at St. Leonards last week and Matt Goss in the Devonport to Launceston, showing that the three 16 year old training partners are obviously doing something right on the roads around Exeter.

A small but strong scratch bunch had caught all of the front markers by the beginning of the fourth and final lap of the Armstrong's lane course. A series of attacks including a dangerous escape by Ryan Sullivan and Kharne Hammersley were all neutralized with the majority of riders looking for a bunch sprint. Josh Wilson again tried his hand with a late break but was recaptured within sight of the line.

In the final dash to the finish, Matt Goss looked like he would take his second win of the season until Sulzberger slipped past on the inside with a late burst of speed just metres from the line.

Sulzberger is now well on the way to a full recovery following a number of setbacks late last season, including a farm accident that saw him miss several months of competition with a broken collarbone.

Throughout their final year in the under 17 ranks, Sulzberger and Goss shared most of the state's major road races between them and this early display of form indicates the two riders may well be a force to be reckoned with in the senior ranks.
