Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Mildura-Coomealla CC - Summer Series Road Race ChampionshipMarch 30, 2003By Peter Winton In keeping with the regular numbers at races throughout the summer, 14 cyclists turned out on a beautiful Sunday morning after enjoying the extra hour courtesy of the end of daylight saving. As riders prepared themselves for the summer finale all began to wonder where the B grade leader was. The absence of Brendan "Bob the Builder" Liddle was quite noticeable. The main interest in the road race was the B grade challenge, apart from the Baudry-Tankard- Wells tactics in A grade. It was 9:00 am, start time and still no B grade leader. Riders were prepared to let him in late if he was "just around the corner" so to speak. The starter had signaled her intention to get going and the race was away. Just around the corner came the "late" Liddle! He suffered a 10 point penalty for that and joined in on the back. Well, we'd rather have a rider involved in our races than out of it due to a minor setback. It wasn't long before Chris Baudry flexed his leg muscles and charged away from the bunch on lap2. Several bursts of energy from the leading riders never fractured the group, I think they were being kind to us, until Kevin Tankard decided time was up at the 45km mark. With Tankard off the front by about 50 metres, Winton took up the challenge to break away from the B grade challengers and try to get to Tankard's wheel, foolish person, her never quite made it. Copping a spray from Ian Beruldsen on the way past, he mumbled something unprintable. The pack never quite got to the "big engine" as he went to finish second some 1 minute and 24 seconds behind the "crazee one". In the closing stages it was Arthur Anderson, roaring to the front of the remaining pack, from the rear as usual, at the 500m mark. Once again Winton saw an opportunity to break the shackles of Brendan Liddle by getting to Anderson's wheel before the Golf Club corner. In the straight (300m long) and digging as deep as he could, Liddle chewed away at Winton's lead. Edging closer and closer, Liddle's shadow cast by the morning sun was approaching the Presidents black Avanti. With no more to give Winton was caught 15m before the line and Brendan Liddle took the B grade points by half a bike length and the summer B grade championship by 3 points.
