The course takes in the Channel Highway south of Hobart Tasmania and tackles the local hill known as the Bonnet. Local Verne Reid was ahead by the first check, leading Sid Taberlay by seven seconds but Sid (soon to join the Mapei MTB squad) showed remarkable climbing ability as he blasted over the "Bonnet" averaging over 33 km/h up the hill, setting a new course record in 12:18. Verne Reid and newcomer Brendan Harris took the minor places. Excellent rides from Sally Smith (top female) and Jake Salmon (Junior) show a depth of talent in the south with 66 riders competing.
