U23 rider takes the Grafton
This year's Grafton to Inverell Classic has been won by Lee Godfrey, an U23
rider from Victoria, with Paul Redenbach second and Trent Wilson (iTeamnova.com)
in third. Fourth across the line was Klayten Smith from NSW (Caravello), who
last weekend won the elite men's road
race at the Australian National Road Cycling Championships in Queensland.
The four riders were part of a six-rider break that had gone
clear from a leading group of 32 shortly after they went through
Glen Innes. They worked together to build up a lead, as they
still had almost 70km until the finish. The six were together
until they hit Wire Gully, a short sharp climb which almost
always sees an attack by one of more of the strongest riders.
This year it was Trent Wilson who put in an attack which whittled
the break down to four. Behind, other riders from the group
which made it to Glen Innes together for the town sprint had
also got away and were chasing hard.
As the leading four approached the town of Inverell for the
finish, they began to play out the tactics and save their legs
for the sprint, all the while the chasers had picked up the
other two riders and were working hard to bring them back. They
came close in the end as this year's Grafton included one circuit
of the main town square in Inverell, adding another kilometre
to race. The chasers came within 150 metres of the lead four
and were encouraged by the crowd of 1500 which gathered in the
main town square to watch the finale. But lead four stayed clear
for the final sprint, taken out by Godfrey, a promising young
rider currently working with leading Victorian road coach Dave
Sanders, in 6.44.48.
A significant player in the chasing group - which hit the line
less than one minute behind the leading four - was B grade rider
Nathan Jones, who rode hard all day to take out first place
in his division in 6.45.35.
This year's Grafton also featured a separate 140km race for
women, won by Jennifer Manefield - who also won the road
race at the Australian National Road Cycling Championships
last weekend- from Hellen Kelly and Jane Despas. Previously,
feamle riders would start from Grafton at the same time as the
men, but this year a separate event was introduced as part of
the national road series, giving their race the same status
it has for the men. The women's race started from the Ranger's
Station, which is above the race's major obstacle, the 17km
climb (see
profile) up the Gilbratar Range and they started racing
after the main group of A and B grade riders had rolled through.
The women also had the same headwind to contend with all day but rode strongly
with Manefield hitting the line in a time of 4.22.09.
