63rd Vuelta a España - GTSpain, August 30 - September 21, 2008Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Rest Day 2 - September 12: Rest DayRolling alongThe Vuelta a España just keeps rolling along. The raced entered the Pyrenees, hitting the high mountains for the first time, and then had a spell of rolling stages. The result? The maillot oro ended up on the shoulders of a relative outsider, who has to be considered more of caretaker than a real contender. Egoi Martínez of Euskaltel-Euskadi was the lucky one, who took advantage of a long breakaway and time bonuses to snatch the leader's jersey away from Astana's Levi Leipheimer. Cyclingnews' Susan Westemeyer examines stages seven to 12. The race favourites – Alberto Contador of Astana, Carlos Sastre of CSC, Caisse d'Epargne's Alejandro Valverde and Leipheimer – all managed to stay close to one another much of the week with a slight advantage going to the two Astana riders. Valverde appeared to lose all his chances on Thursday's stage when the main group gapped him on the descent of the day's final climb. Leipheimer must have felt as everything was going against him in this race. He took the maillot oro in the fifth stage time trial, only to lose it the next day. He won it back on stage seven and lost it the next day when Martínez gathered enough bonus seconds to take the lead by 11 seconds. To top it off, Leipheimer, who has made no secret of the fact that he himself wants to win the Tour de France, had to hear that Lance Armstrong is returning to the peloton – and apparently in an Astana jersey – with the announced intention of winning the Tour yet again. The main theme of the second week was the breakaway. Escape groups controlled stages seven, eight and nine. The sprinters finally got their chances, taking the last three stages – even if the sprints didn't always go as planned. In the mountain rankings, Alessandro Ballan of Lampre won the first Pyrenees stage and took over the red mountain jersey, only to turn it over to David Moncoutié (Cofidis) two days later – both in escape groups, by the way. On the points front, Daniele Bennati (Liquigas) turned the blue jersey over to Valverde for two days, and it ultimately ended up with Greg Van Avermaet of Silence-Lotto, who used – what else – an escape to take it. Stage 7 - September 6: Barbastro - Andorra, 223.2kmAfter the rest day in the shadow of the mountains, things turned serious in this stage with the first high mountains. Alessandro Ballan, better known as a Spring Classics man, showed he can tackle the Pyrenees too. He broke out of the escape group to take the stage win and the overall lead in the race. It was, surprisingly, his first win of the season. The break of the day got away at kilometre 18, with Ballan, Marc De Maar (Rabobank), Gianni Meersman (Française des Jeux), Iñigo Landaluze (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Xabier Zandio (Caisse d'Epargne). The group fell apart at the end, and with 14 kilometres to go, Ballan took off from De Maar and headed up La Rabassa for the second time, to arrive alone at the mountaintop finish 2:42 ahead of his nearest competitor. In the group of favourites, Contador was able to jump out and grab five seconds on his rivals. Results Photos Video Live report Stage 8 - September 7: Andorra - Pla de Beret, 151kmThe stage to Pla de Beret went the way of Astana and Moncoutié, who escaped from the day's escape similar to how Ballan won the day before. Contador and Valverde picked up a few seconds on Sastre, and Leipheimer was able to take back the gold jersey. Moncoutié was part of an early break group, from which he got away with about 20 kilometres to go. He won the last two climbs, both category one, which gave him enough points to take over the mountain jersey as well. However, the real story of the day was Astana. José Luis Rubiera and Andreas Klöden pushed the pace so high on the final climb that Sastre fell out of the group. He caught back, but that just inspired Contador, Valverde and Euskaltel's Igor Antón to take off. They picked up five seconds on Sastre and nearly caught Moncoutié, who salvaged a 34-second lead at the finish line. Results Photos Video Live report Stage 9 - September 8: Viella - Sabiñánigo, 200.8kmLeipheimer lost the maillot oro again, as yet another breakaway was successful, with an outsider moving up from 16th place and 6:41 down to first place and an 11-second lead. Egoi Martínez of Euskaltel took advantage of the circumstances and took the lead, while Silence-Lotto's Van Avermaet out-sprinted his break companions – including some high-powered names – to win the stage. The break, which got away at kilometre 53, included such big names as Davide Rebellin, Juan Antonio Flecha, Damiano Cunego and the previous day's hero, Moncoutié. They came in 6:42 ahead of the peloton. Leipheimer did not seem disappointed in losing the lead, saying the team had purposely held back on the day, letting the escapists go and reserving strength for upcoming stages. Results Photos Video Live report Stage 10 - September 9: Sabiñánigo - Zaragoza, 151.3kmThe sprinters finally had their chance after the mountains, and two French riders were able to dupe the big names. Sébastien Hinault of Team Crédit Agricole out-sprinted Loyd Mondory of AG2R. Well-established sprinters Oscar Freire and Tom Boonen were back in fourth and fifth place. Matej Jurco of Team Milram made the day's long break, but despite a lead of up to over seven minutes, the peloton had him near 15 kilometres to go. Liquigas tried to set things up for Filippo Pozzato, and then Quick Step took over the lead with three kilometres to go, but it was the Frenchmen who had the say in Spain on this day. Results Photos Video Live report Stage 11 - September 10: Calahorra - Burgos, 178kmFreire was able to set things right on this stage, pipping Boonen at the line to take the win. There was another long, but unsuccessful, break during the stage, and Martínez successfully defended his overall lead. Euskaltel controlled things most of the day, with their worst competition coming from the wind. It was at various times a headwind, tailwind and from both sides, and didn't make the rolling parcours any easier. The break of Serafín Martínez (Xacobeo Galicia), José Antonio López (Andalucía-Cajasur) and Andriy Grivko (Team Milram) went clear early, and had a lead of over seven minutes, but the sprinters were determined to use one of their few chances and gathered them in. The fight for position got serious after the final bend at 500 metres. Boonen had the perfect lead out and looked to take the win, but Freire sneaked up on him and won by centimetres. Results Photos Video Live report Stage 12 - September 11: Burgos - Suances, 186.4kmItaly ruled on this day by taking the top four spots in Suances. Reigning World Champion, Paolo Bettini, took his second win of the Vuelta, on the day that he fell out with his employer, Team Quick Step. The big news among the favourites was that Valverde lost over three minuets and dropped to 11th place. The other main theme of the day was the weather. The sun and heat of the first week were long gone, and this stage featured rain, fog and cool temperatures. Again, an escape group got away, but this time the peloton didn't let the lead get so big and roped them in with 30 kilometres to go. At that point, though Valverde had already disappeared from the scene. He dropped back on the final descent of the day, with 50 kilometres to go, and despite furious efforts, was never able to catch up again.
