Norwood Cycling Club Criterium Racing

Incorporating the Sprint Series

Round 32, Regency Park, South Australia March 26, 2006

Club Championship Races for Norwood, Adelaide, Noarlunga South Coast & Sturt Holdfast Marion Cycling Clubs

Perfect conditions earlier in the day but by the time the Clubs combined Championship races started at 11.00am, the wind had picked up and was quite blustery. 51 riders signed on to be part of the championship. Early on in the race, just after the start, Cameron Malouf of Revolution Cycle Centre, Josh Smith & Olympic Champion Brett Aitken of Savings & Loans combined to gain an advantage on the field. In these conditions it was going to be hard but they held their ground, or the bunch let them hang out in front to tire.

Then Kym Howard of Mittiga, Main North Nissan, junior Reuben Menaud-Young of Team O’Grady and Mark Laube combined to form a chasing group behind the other three breakaway riders. It looked like two teams pursuits off the front of the main pack. They held their positions like this for twenty minutes or so, then Will Dickeson of Savings & Loans went for a solo attack from the main pack to chase them down while sprinter Laube put up the flag and went back to the pack. The front groups came together, then with the fresher legs they combined with another couple of riders and the gap increased.

Now there were two groups on the road, the breakaway leaders with some top gun cyclists and the main pack content to let them ride off the front. As time counted down the crowd were getting exited and were encouraging the main pack to pick up their pace. As we have seen so many times this season the attackers tried to ride away with the win. Then with Michael McGee followed by Chris Luxton of Orbea, Alan Gill of Polar Pursuit Performance and the rest of the main pack they picked up their pace to bring the leaders back. In the strong windy conditions this proved too taxing for a handful of riders who had to call it a day.

With twelve minutes and three laps left of the one hour event it all came back together. Some of the dropped riders tried valiantly to get back on the bunch as the pace well and truly dropped off as riders started jockeying for position. It was obvious it was too hard in the wind to try a solo break with such a big pack remaining in the race, so the riders started to regroup getting ready to lead out their sprinters. No attacks came at all and with one lap remaining all were still together.

Heading into the finishing straight it was Brett Aitken of Savings & Loans versus Chris Luxton of Orbea, head to head they sprinted for the line opening a gap to the rest. Both hit the line at the same time but Aitken threw his bike the farthest and going to camera for the result it was Aitken over Luxton by a tire width. What a fast a furious sprint it was with both riders hitting top form when it counts at the end of the season. Russell Gill of Team O’Grady came home for third just ahead of Brett Geisler of JT Cycles Brighton over junior SASI rider Jack Bobridge, who will be off to the junior World Track Titles.

The riders have just one more Norwood Cycling Club Tuesday criterium hit out at Regency Park before heading to Whitmore Square for the City of Adelaide Lord Mayors Cup this Sunday 2 April for the 1 hour $1000 Savings & Loans State Criterium Championships and 1800m $1000 Sealink-Ozone Hotel Business House Wheelrace. Women also have the Herb Valley Vitamins Open State Criterium Championship over 20 minutes starting the family picnic day off at 9.00am. Juniors will also be catered for with the CSC TEAM O’GRADY Wheelrace and A & B grade criteriums.
