Northern Districts Cycle Club hosted round one of the Hay Street Chiropractic Women's Criterium Series at their new club criterium circuit in Wangara. The biggest women's only field seen in WA for a long time completed the thirty-minute race with an average of 37km/hr.

Attacks were present right off the start line, although there were no really threatening moves the pressure was kept on for the duration of the event. With three laps to go Nathalie Laurendeau and Amy Kirk made the move that was to win them the race, holding off the field Nathalie just made it over Amy in the final kick. Hayley Rutherford made her debut race following her long season racing in Europe to take out the sprint prime and lead the bunch home for third place closely followed by Rachel Sherborne, Sharon Suckling, Leeanne Manderson and Kelly McCombie.

Series background

Western Australian female cyclists have long been waiting for a high profile women's event to strive for and one has finally arrived.

In 2002 Perth women started pushing for a women's support event to be held at the 2003 Perth Criterium Series, although unsuccessful in that year they continued on and with the help of the Western Australian Cycling Federation (WACF) were granted a race in the 2004 series.

With the cooperation of the Perth Criterium Series (PCS) the WACF is running a Women's Criterium Series during November, December and January. The women's series consists of four races, the last being the Series Final to be held at the Perth Criterium Series in Victoria Park. Points will be awarded for participation and the first five places in each race, the top 15 riders after the third race will be awarded a start in the Series Final (with 5 wild cards available).

The Western Australian Cycling Federation would like to thank the Perth Criterium Series for providing the opportunity to promote and develop elite women's cycling at such a reputable event.
