Results and Reports from AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to Cyclingnews Illawarra CCNovember 9, 2003Mighty MorrisTim Morris used his fast finish to finish first in the Caesar's Illawarra Cycle Club 27 kilometre A-grade scratch race on Sunday. Gavin Drury won A1-grade, Dean Kelly B-grade and Vince O'Dwyer won C-grade. Forty-one riders over four grades took advantage of ideal conditions for the action-packed sprint-style of racing. With two turn-arounds and a sharp climb on each of the three high-speed laps, the riders did well to keep their grades together. Danny Hennessy started the A-grade action on lap one. The race was kept busy with attacks and counter-attacks. The bunch was back together in the final few kilometres and the race was decided by a sprint. Morris won the gallop with Steve Franklin and Danny Hennessy rounding out the top three. The A1-grade event was a similar affair with regular attacks throughout the race. Austin Pitman and Kirk Brown opened a 30 metre gap on the first lap before the bunch brought them back only to have Frank Tortorici attack several more times on the second and last laps. It was Gavin Drury who eventually won the sprint from Tortorici and Adrian Cooper. The work was shared evenly in the B-grade race until lap two when the stronger riders attacked on the climb at Hooker Hill. The bunch was more prepared on lap three and stayed together until the far turn stretched them out. By the run down to the Y-intersection the bunch was together again briefly until Dean Kelly attacked. Quick action by Stewart Binns shut down his attempt. Next it was Paul Kaye who tried to escape in the final kilometre, putting about 10 metres on the group before Pat Delahunty brought the bunch up. Peter Evans used this opportunity to counter attack taking Kelly, Binns and Fiona Campbell with him. Kelly had a clear run to the line, Binns took a deserved second place and Delahunty stole two places in the last 100 metres to take third. Four new members filled out the eight-strong C-grade field. Whilst Emma Ringer and Vince O'Dwyer swapped off turns at the front, new riders were being tutored by experienced riders further back. It was O'Dwyer who eventually won with New rider Belinda Scott taking second and Adam Hotchkiss third. Next week is a 27 kilometre scratch race with group 9 providing marshals.
