Anthony Rappo Memorial

Eastern Creek, Sydney, November 16, 2003

Jens Mouris wins in close sprint

By Brad Hooker

Dutch visitor Jens Mouris (Rabobank TT3) won the Anthony Rappo Memorial A grade race in a close fought sprint against Brian Appleyard (Clarence Street) and Kevin Aubrey (Bankstown). Mouris, a track specialist who represented The Netherlands at the 2000 Olympics, was the strongest rider on the day and made up for his disappointment at missing the final break in yesterday's Randwick Botany Centenary race.

The day was a great success with around 170 riders competing over 6 Grades. Comments after the race by some of the elite riders were very positive and they loved the venue, which had been changed to the Eastern Creek Raceway at the last minute. The wide roads, no cars and undulating course made for fast, close racing. The only problem was the bunch finishes at the end, but this was all sorted out.

With the size of the fields, it was thought having all grades on at once was a disaster waiting to happen, but grades passed each other without a hitch. The only problem was the early start at 7.30am and the early arrival of the heat. The early start was due to the fact that we had to have riders off the raceway before 9am.

The A Grade race was hotly contested with about 20 riders competing. An early break of four riders escaped including Jens Mouris (Rabobank TT3), Luis Trueba (Lidcombe Auburn) and Jeff Jones (Cyclingnews/Randwick Botany), but the field would not let them get too far ahead and they were caught after 20 km. The field became very watchful after that and despite many attempts to attack, no-one could get away for long. Mouris lined up for the bunch sprint in third wheel behind a two man leadout, and was able to hold off Brian Appleyard and a close finishing Kevin Aubrey in the throw for the line.

After the race, third placed Kevin Aubrey echoed the thoughts of many when he said, "I want more racing here, that was awesome, great course and no pot holes."

A big thanks goes to Waratah Vets for allowing us to run this race on their course for the day, also to St. Johns Ambulance and Red Cross for being in attendance and not needed; to all the sponsors of the day who donated prizes for the raffle or the food for the BBQ; to ABC Bikes for the Mountain Bike for 1st Prize in the Raffle; to Eastern Creek Raceway for allowing the cyclists' use of this great venue and to Marconi Cycling Club for the time put into this great event. Let's hope we can get some more Elite racing out at Eastern Creek Raceway.
