Rutter by half wheel

Sunday morning looked like the great weather from Saturday was going to continue except for the gusty north westerly that sprung up early in the morning. The pleasant conditions saw forty five riders being graded into four groups for the 27.5km scratch races.

Although A grade only had eight riders it was a class field. Not content with rolling along waiting for the finishing sprint there were several serious attacks. Craig Williams was off the front of the bunch for almost a lap. When he was caught and back to the Pelton, Graham Rutter counter attacked. The scenario was repeated several times with Tim Morris, Danny Hennessy and Luke Dale also getting away to no avail. In a six up sprint it was Rutter who was successful from Brett Townsend and Morris in 39:49.

A1 consisted of a large field of closely matched riders. A few riders tried to attack on the first couple of laps but they were closely covered by the rest of the bunch. It wasn't until the last lap with about 1.5 km to go that Jonathon Stagg launched an all out attack that was to split the race. Mitchell Burns lead the pursuit with a few other close behind. Just as Burns caught Stagg, at the bottom of the last rise, a counterattack was launched by Austin Pitman with Adrian Cooper on his wheel. Cooper waited and timed his sprint to the line to take the race ahead of Keith Bennett who had chased well to get on the two leaders, Pitman held onto third ahead of the rest of the pursuers. The winning time was 41:22.

A very large bunch of seventeen riders made up the B grade group. With so many riders it looked highly likely that the result would come down to a bunch sprint. The rise up to Hooker hill was the only place where the riders were put under pressure with the bunch thinning out on the ascent and regrouping on the run down to the turn around. Dean Kelly, Alex Verdi, Mark O'Keefe and Garry Doughty all tested the bunch on the climb. The work on the front was reasonably well shared around with everyone contributing, including Phil Jones, Tony Stephenson, Warren Poole, Michael Comensoli and Stuart Binns. The winning move was made by Comensoli with 1km to the finish when he rode off the front of the bunch to cross the line 4 seconds infront of the bunch in 43:34. Doughty and Jones were second and third respectively.

C grade broke up and the scratch race turned into individual time trials. Sally Watts won the race in 46:50 with Mitch Harris second and Vince O'Dwyer third.

Next week's race is a 37.5km Feature Race, group 10 to marshal.
