Steele pulls away to win in Loxton

The Riverland Cycling Club's Sunday road race held at Loxton produced a close finish with the first eleven of the fifteen riders finishing within two or three minutes of the winner. Fine conditions ensured that no advantage was given to any riders for the 45km race handicap race.

The first lap saw most chasing groups close the gap on the riders in front of them. A group of Bob Pankhurst, Louise Nitschke and Angelo Ylia had put in great first lap and were giving themselves every chance of catching Gordon Lawton who had a 10-minute head start. Behind them a group of six lead by Amanda Steele had also reduced their gap of 11 minutes to the Pankhurst group to only five minutes. A close finish was now definitely on the cards. Further back Chris Stevens and visiting rider Robert Kent were riding well together, catching the group in front of them within the first five kilometres.

The last six kilometres of the race saw Steele's group catch and push past the group of Pankhurst, Nitschke and Ylia. Pankhurst got himself in a good position and joined up with the passing group. Nitschke and Ylia weren't so lucky. With only kilometres to go Steele broke away and put a slight gap into her chasing competitors. Pankhurst tried to stay with her but at the finish it was Steele first and Pankhurst second. Next across the line came Peter Weston and was closely followed by Brenton Woon (4th) and Ruth Strout (5th). Fastest time went to Chris Stevens who finished just in front of Robert Kent. Stevens and Kent produced an average speed of 35 km/hr for the 2 lap race. Next Sunday's Road race will be held at Winkie for the Mildura Invite race. Race nominations to be in by 9:30am with racing to commence at 10am. A BBQ lunch will follow at 12 noon.
