A massive turn out of over 90 A Grade riders left organisers with something of a dilemma: just how many riders can the 12 metre wide Glenvale Crescent circuit cope with at one time? In the end, the riders were split into two races, with the best local riders invited to join the Commonwealth Games squads tuning up for the time trial, mountain bike and road races. Riders from Canada, Wales, Northern Ireland and Malaysia have raced at Glenvale over the past few weeks, and were joined by riders from England, New Zealand, Jamaica, the Bahamas, Guyana, the Cayman Islands, and Bermuda, many of who were fresh off the plane and keen to stretch their legs.
As expected, the action in the 'internationals' race was fast and furious. British national champion Russell Downing (DFL/Cyclingnews) attacked early and often, and the Welsh squad all took their turn off the front of the field. Australian MTB medal chance Chris Jongewaard (Savings & Loans) ripped out some huge turns to keep the field in single file. Julian Winn (Wales) joined locals Danny Kah and Nick Culvenor in a promising move at the thirty minute mark which Robin Reid (Marco Polo) tried to reach, but the bunch used him to leapfrog to the leaders. Pat Shaw (Giant/VIS), the leading rider in the host club's summer series, counter attacked and held off the field for two laps before surrendering to the relentless chase.

The final break of note saw Dale Appleby (Wales), Cam Carlyle (BikeNOW), Anwar Manan (Malaysia) and Shaw clear, but once again, within two laps the field regrouped. The Malaysian team, led by their flag bearer at the Comm Games opening ceremony Shahrulneeza Razali took control in the final two laps, setting up the sprint for their fast man, Mohd Jasmin. A final lap flyer from local Mark Howard (O'Mara Cycles) wasn't enough to upset the sprinters, and Jasmin duly delivered with an impressive finishing burst, ahead of Downing who made ground late to sneak in ahead of Winn and the best of the locals, Aaron Salisbury (HLP).
The second A Grade race of the morning saw Ash Hayat (The Freedom Machine) break away 25 minutes in, and work well with Jake Sutherland (Fitzroy Cycles), but there were plenty of willing participants in the chase to pull them back. Once the leaders had been caught, the pace stayed high enough to keep the bunch strung out, with all attacks quickly pounced on. Danny Cohen (TFM) snuck away at three to go, with track specialist Rob Tidey (O'Mara) in pursuit, but a bunch sprint was always on the cards. Sutherland was fresh enough after his early efforts to burst through for the win, ahead of Charles Howlett, Matt Sherwin (BikeNOW) and Russell Edgar (Specialized).

A dozen of the Comm Games women joined the B Grade field, and made life unpleasant for those locals more used to a fast but steady pace. The girls from New Zealand, including Michelle Hyland, Sonia Foote and Rosara Joseph launched a succession of attacks, matched by similar aggression from Amy Moore (T-Mobile/Canada) and Amy Hunt (England). Tess Downing (Drapac/Porsche Development Program) showed no sign of tiredness after a series of late nights in the Under 19 exhibition races at the Games, and stayed at the front of the big bunch, shoulder to shoulder with established stars Nicole Cooke (Univega/Wales) and Helen Kelly (VIS). Canadian trackies Gina Grain and Mandy Poitras opted for an easier ride at the back of the bunch, but Grain made her way up to the pointy end with little trouble at the call of three to go. In the final lap, Grain's team mates positioned her perfectly to hit the lead 150 metres from the line, but she couldn't match the horsepower of Clint Van Beveren and Russell Collins and had to settle for third. Cooke was close behind in outright fifth, with Amy Hunt the third placed women finisher.
Two of the club's promising youngsters battled out the sprint win in C Grade, with the honours - this time - to Dean Berry (Bicycle Superstore) ahead of Mitchell Gregory. Debutant Dion Coote was next home, and Fiona Adler took the Women's section ahead of Emma Gaul (Giramondo) and South Australian visitor Therese Rhodes. School holidays obviously agree with Geelong boarding school student Pascoe Gordon, who convincingly won the D Grade sprint from Mark Wilson, Russell Dark and Matt Reynolds. Nat Howard was the fastest of the ladies, finishing in front of Su Ann Tan and Nana Jernstrom.

Pat Shaw continues to lead the Inexa Summer Series (where over $7000 of prizes, including a complete Inexa Carbon C-2/Ultegra 10 and an X-1/105 10 bikes are up for grabs), four points ahead of Michael Vogt. Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy) remains the Women's leader on the strength of her consistent Tuesday night finishes. Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue with the final Tuesday Twilight race at Sandown Racecourse (Melways map 80J6) for the season. Sunday mornings continue until the end of April at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). B, D and E Grades start at 9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. Please note there will no racing at Glenvale on March 26, the day of the Commonwealth Games Road Races, and there will be separate races for women on April 2.
All holders of current UCI or Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking out a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events. For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
