After a week off for the Commonwealth Games, it was business as usual at Glenvale Crescent, although with the temperature a good 15 degrees cooler than it had been in recent weeks. The cool Melbourne morning was still a lot more pleasant than the conditions faced by a number of the Club's riders the day before in the Baw Baw Classic - where finishers were greeted by sub-zero temperatures and snow fall at the Mt Baw Baw summit! Congratulations to Helen Kelly for taking the win in the Women's race, and to Ken Ford for his amazing sixth win in succession in the Masters 4, 5 & 6 division, and to everyone else mad enough to take part.
Back at Glenvale, the A Grade race was pretty much decided in the first ten
minutes. After a first lap solo effort from Damon De Angelis (Promains) was
reeled in, a counter attack by Gitane/SHM duo Brendan Rowbotham and Peter Barnett,
Nick Walker (CBD Cycles), Warren Knevitt (O'Mara Cycles), Julian Dutton (SmallDog.com.au)
and Greg Nicholson (Pro-Motion) took off and were quickly out of sight.
The best efforts of in form riders like Inexa series leader Pat Shaw (Giant/VIS),
Aaron Salisbury (HLP), Danny Kah and David Sturt (Pro-Motion) weren't enough
to make any inroads into the deficit, allowing the six escapees to take all
the prizes. The freshest in the group, Barnett had had the easiest ride courtesy
of the presence of his hard working team mate, and attacked the group at the
bell to take the win. In a tight sprint for second, Dutton led out, and was
able to hold off local trackie Knevitt, with Rowbotham fourth.
The B Grade race saw a number of early breaks open handy gaps, but none big
enough to put the bunch out of contention. Mark Kotzen, Gareth Martyn (O'Mara),
Michael Chiller and Tess Downing (Drapac-Porsche Development) featured in one
move, with Downing also chasing across to the most threatening break containing
Peter Zvedeniuk, Brian Nguyen, Glenn Wright (Giramondo) and Andrew Robinson
(Spoke'n).
In the closing stages, a bunch sprint was always on the cards, although Gary
Simondson and Cam Rotter (Burnley Finance) both tried to slip away alone in
the final three laps. The Burnley boys were well positioned for the final dash
to the line, but were unable to match the effort by Zvedeniuk, who took the
sprint ahead of James Shepherdson (Burnley), Nguyen and Richard Cormick (Burnley).
The final race in the Tri-Alliance Women's Super Summer series saw a good field
tackle the sport category. Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy Cycles) and Michelle Murrell
did their best to split the field in the early stages, but weren't allowed to
dictate terms and were chased down whenever they attacked.
The race was decided with a bunch sprint, where Howard proved too strong for
Tri-Alliance rider Clare Vlahopolous and Athena Wilson. With the majority of
the Pro women back to Europe or the US, the remaining local Elite women raced
amongst the B Grade men. Tess Downing was aggressive early, but the win went
to Peta Mullens (VIS) who gambled on a final lap surge after her efforts at
Baw Baw the day before.
Dean Berry (Bicycle Superstore) will see out the season in B Grade, after a
good win in the C Grade bunch sprint, with regular place-getters Jarrad Anderson
and Clint McDonell also on the move after following Berry home. It's a similar
scenario in D Grade with Fabio Angelini (Bicycle Superstore) taking the win
from promising junior Calvin Watson and Marco Nardo: both Angelini and Nardo
are well and truly ready for C Grade.
Pat Shaw continues to lead the Inexa Summer Series (where over $7000 of prizes,
including a complete Inexa Carbon C-2/Ultegra 10 and an X-1/105 10 bikes are
up for grabs), four points ahead of Michael Vogt. Kerrie Howard (Fitzroy) remains
the Women's leader and has jumped to third place overall after her win in the
Women's race today.
Carnegie Caulfield Criteriums continue Sunday mornings continue until the end
of April at Glenvale Crescent (Melways map 80B2). B, D and E Grades start at
9am, while A and C Grade ride at 10am. Please note there will no racing at Glenvale
on Easter Sunday.
All holders of current UCI or Cycling Australia licenses are welcome (don't
forget to bring your license or receipt!) and non-members can have a go by taking
out a day license for $20. 2006 licenses are now available at all CCCC events.
For first time competitors and the younger juniors, Tokyo Olympian Mick Hollingsworth
conducts novice racing clinics within the E Grade race at Glenvale Crescent.
