2nd annual Criterium Queensland Carnival

Caravello Dominate

The first stage of the Criterium Queensland Carnival kicked off on Friday afternoon, November 14, in Nanango. A good vocal crowd turned out to cheer an exotic field of over 40 professional riders. Singapore, Mongolia, Uruguay, New Zealand and Australia were all represented.

The Nanango criterium turned out to be an enthralling battle between the two top teams in the criterium tour, Caravello and New Zealand. The attacks came in flurries with New Zealand well represented by the Yates brothers Jeremy and Matt, along with Stephen Elden and Jaaron Poad. Caravello had the two Uruguayans Hector Morales and Jorge Libonatti along with top Aussies Robert McLachlan and Tony Mann.

It finally came to a two-man sprint after Jeremy Yates and Morales slipped away and rode to a third of a lap gap. Morales won the sprint to give Caravello the early advantage, while McLachlan won the bunch sprint to take out third spot.

In Mundubbera on Saturday afternoon the streets were alive with children's act the Pooki Doos and Brisbane band Glasshouse adding some noise for the enthusiastic crowd on hand. It was today that the wheels fell off for New Zealand as Caravello took control. First it was McLachlan that rode away, and then Mann followed by Libonatti. These three stayed away in their solo positions to take out the top three places respectively.

With both the Yates brothers withdrawing it was left to Poad, Lifecycle's David Betts, Healthworks rider Adrian Booth and Gold Coast's Chris Seldon to stop Morales making it a clean sweep for Caravello. When Gold Coast rider Daniel Bennett fell on the second last corner taking out Poad and impeding the run of Booth, it was plain sailing for Morales ahead of Betts in fifth.

On Sunday in the National Trust town of Childers the Caravello team put on a show rarely seen in criterium racing. McLachlan flew from the pack and opened up a huge lead. When teammate Morales followed suit, McLachlan waited to put the two together out front. When Mann leapt from the pack it was becoming painfully obvious for the rest of the field what was happening. Finally Libonatti jumped across and the entire red and yellow team called Caravello rode like an Olympic pursuit team. Jeremy Yates jumped clear late in the race but never looked like making headway into the perfectly oiled Caravello machine. Mann took out the final race ahead of Libonatti and Morales, with McLachlan fourth.

McLachlan won the overall series and the sprint competition ahead of Morales and Mann. Caravello took out the teams ahead of New Zealand and Lifecycle.

Baden Burke fined by Kingaroy Police

After race of the Criterium Queensland Carnival in Nanango, several riders travelled to Kingaroy, about 20km northwest of the town, to let their hair town. After Burke had a few quiet beers he decided to call it a night and head back to his quarters in Nanango. As he walked out of the local RSL past several bouncers he walked to a bin just metres away where he discarded an empty he still had in his hand from inside. Subsequently Burke was pulled aside by police officers where he was questioned and fined. When asked by local constabulary "do you accept this ticket", Burke said no and walked over to a cab and went home.

Burke said he had just walked out of the club carrying the empty container and walked just metres to lodge it in a bin. Other riders were witness to the whole event including New Zealander Stephen Elden.

Race organiser Chris Carson said he will "watch the outcome of this very closely and if anything comes off this and Baden is fined I will intervene and do everything in my power to assist everyone see it how it logically should be seen".
