Tour de Toona set with two new stages

By Mark Zalewski, North American Editor

The International Tour de Toona is ready to feature the top teams of the US calendar, providing the same course lengths for both the men and women, and a larger prize purse for the women. Understandably, this race is one of the key stops on the calendar for domestic women's teams and should be full of action-packed racing. Adding to the action are two new stages, a team time trial opening the racing and a new point-to-point race on day two with a lot of climbing.

Headlining the women's race will be defending champion Kristin Armstrong (TEAm Lipton), who is fresh off another national time trial title. A strong challenge to her title will come from teams such as Colavita-Suter Home which just finished the women's Giro d'Italia. Also posing a threat will be teams like Cheerwine with Laura Van Gilder and Aaron's Pro Cycling.

The men's racing will be equally as strong. Defending champion Sergey Lagutin (Navigators Insurance) is back with a very strong team, including Tour de Beauce winner Ben Day, New Zealand time trial champion Glen Chadwick and Cascade Cycling Classic winner Phil Zajicek.

Challenging Naviagtors will be a balanced NRC field, with Health Net-Maxxis looking to avenge some 2006 bad luck. "After last year, yeah, I'm pretty motivated,"said Aussie Karl Menzies, referring to being led off course in the final road stage. Fellow Aussie Nathan O'Neill will also be riding, and a threat to the overall himself, after winning the Mt. Hood Classic.

Also looking to challenge will be Toyota-United, with Chris Baldwin and Chris Wherry. Baldwin has had a good but frustrating season, a second place finish at Cascade.
