Competitors lined up for the five stage race in either Mountain bike, Road Race or 7 stages for the die hards racing the Iron Boomerang. Saturday commenced with the road race followed by the mountain bike point to point, the road time trial and the mountain bike time trial. Before dusk the combined road and MTB 50 metre sprint knock out finished the days racing. This was followed by a pasta party Saturday night with heaps of random giveaways for all competitors. This included a Giant XTC2 MTB. Sunday's racing consisted of a road and MTB hill climb, a road criterium and a mountain bike cross country. The competition was keen at the pointy end of the field with Tim McColl taking the Iron Boomerang for the second year running and Janine Ridsdale taking the female Iron Boomerang from Tims wife, Shelley. Cal Britten won the MTB Open, Paul Clancy from Griffiths and Louise Dwyer from Murchison the 30+ category. Phil Anderson and Megan Hill took the 40+ MTB and Mt Beauty local legend Bernie McArdle won the 50+ MTB mens and Adair Ferguson the 50+ womens. On the Road the winners were Stuart Morgan and Katie OKeefe (open), Aaron Christiansen won the 30+ making it 2 in a row and Michael Pratt and Lyn Cheshire the 40+. Michele Donegan and Stephen Thomas cleaned up the road 50+. Conversley, there were a number of entrants who had never raced a cycle event before. Congratulations to Adele Wedding, Louise Dwyer, Megan Hill and Lyn Cheshire for completing the grueling weekend of racing. Some statisticsMichelle Donegan and Katie OKeefe have both raced the Boomerang before, but this year Katie had something to prove, after her mother rolled her on the Melbourne TV cycling show Sooty Park in the roller room competition. The head start given was not calculated too carefully, and it was never recovered! In her favour at Mt Beauty, the course was a lot longer than the virtual 600m on the tele. There were two father/son combinations, Bernie and Matt McArdle and Tony and James Crapper (sister Helen also raced, see below). The Boomerangs 50 metre sprint claims to be the only known event in the world where MTB and road bikes race together. Helen Crapper won the Open women for the 2nd year, on a road bike, while another Van Der Ploeg brother won the mens on an MTB, this year it was Paul ending brother Neils 2 year run. The Boomerang is the only event Australian cycling legend Phil Anderson races now. Phil comes to the event untrained (and truly untrained not the usual story that people give you) and still holds pace in the off road category with all the riders, some who probably have never even heard of him as they were in nappies when he was a pro! He placed 3rd in the weekends toughest MTB stage, Saturday mornings Point to Point. PhotographyFor a thumbnail gallery of these images, click here Images by Emma Colson/www.topbike.com.au
