The Charles Coin Memorial Laidley Classic
Laidley, Queensland, July 21, 2002
by Scott Dobeli
Cat 1 race open A grade race.
The pace was on from the gun. The main bunch was caught napping with a group of 6 riders breaking clear only 5Km into the race. The group worked perfectly together and stretched the gap out to 3min at one stage. Their effort took its toll however, and by the completion of 7 laps, Stuart Cowin was the only rider left out of the breakaway group. Stuart, riding for the Merida team, put in a superb solo effort to secure a convincing win. Bart Duraj claimed second place, giving a 1-2 finish for the Merida team.
The Category 2 riders had an equally aggressive race with numerous attacks and breaks. With approx 45Km of racing remaining and the bunch back together, Gavin Williams from University of Queensland decided it was his turn to attack. Gavin timed his solo attack to perfection, finishing on top of the podium with a 2 minute advantage on the main bunch.
Cat 3 .
Solo breakaways proved to be the winning tactic for the day. The Category 3 race was won by University of Queensland rider Mick (Nutsy) Staggers who broke away from the bunch in lap 5 of the 8 lap race to claim victory. The first female rider across the finish line was Nicole Tasker from the Broncos Club.
