Nineteen starters hit the tarmac on Sunday morning on a cold and brisk day. Front markers Hayley Ford, Cathie Graham, and Shallan Pask set a good early tempo on the 20km of flat road that greeted them first. As the later groups were sent off, the cold westerly winds picked up making it a bit more difficult for them to chase.

Scratch markers were off to a good start picking up two bunches -- the 1.5 min and 2.5 min groups -- within the first 12km. Once all three groups got sorted they peeled off a good rhythm and set about catching the front groups. 25km into the race the front markers were the only bunch left out, all the rest had been swallowed up by the back groups.

With 15km to go the scratch riders Adrian Elull, Dan Mclean, John Searston, and Damian Harris left the big group in pursuit of the leaders. John Searston was first to crack on the hills then the three remaining scratchies motored up the highway as they picked up a tailwind. The front markers were caught with 8km to go, leaving the three back starters to fight out the finish. Damian Harris took out the sprint, followed by Adrian Elull then Dan McLean.
