Results and Reports for June 29-July 5, 2002AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Mildura-Coomealla CC handicapJune 29, 2002Welshy wins one!By Peter Winton Like a chook with its head cut off, the few Mildura riders who attempted to locate the Red Cliffs cemetery circuit on Saturday didn't have much of a memory as to where it was. Has it really been that long since they raced there? Six riders were competing in the South Australian Open road championships in Lyndoch and two others were involved in the wedding of Barry Pollock's daughter (how many more daughters do you have Barry?) A coupla others were otherwise unavailable. So, seven riders eventually made it, after a few false starts, to the nominated location and decided upon a reduced program of a five lap (40km) scratch race. Off they go on a sunny day with veteran Bill Wass unceremoniously spat out the back, but he had a surprise in store for his much younger charges, he found a short-cut! Suddenly he was in front at the end of lap 1. Adrian Lloyd was the next casualty of the tempo set by Adam Wightwick. Adam Wightwick, had "trained to the max" for this race due to the puppy-walking he'd been doing recently (an innovative way to boost the kilos for the upcoming Tour of Sunraysia). Peter Mills also, after having re-visited the Red Cliffs Golf Club circuit earlier in the day, peaking at the right time for the Duathlon Championships, saw to it to crank up the pace and this blew away Adrian Lloyd from the scratch bunch, Mark Phillips and Brendan Liddle managing to stay in touch. Now, Mark Phillips has been struggling lately to get time on the bike due to the turmoil surrounding the Qantas regional airline service. Not only does he have to maintain the financial accounts but, at times, he also acts as baggage handler and passenger helper-upper along with untying the propeller thingy. How many roles can one man have and find time to race as well? The other race attended by Mildura riders over this last weekend, the Lyndoch Classic 110km Open SA Championship, was a good contest with a big bunch sprint taken out by Matt Miller in 2hrs 35 mins 32 secs. Matt passed on his hello's to John Pollock and his father, Barry, visiting the Spaniards in, where else but Spain. All Mildura riders completed the race but outside of a top 10 placing from the 66 strong field. Results & excuses1 Nathan Welsh (decided to leave the Cosmics at home on windy days and it paid off) 2 Mark Phillips (40km a week in training is not quite the ideal preparation) 3 Brendan Liddle (vibrations in the back wheel this time were not from a flat tyre) 4 Adrian Lloyd (too much time spent out in the wind) 5 Bill Wass (too much time spent trying to get back onto the right course) DNF Adam Wightwick (sore legs from too much walking of the young puppy) DNF Peter Mills (started one lap down after attempting to race the wrong circuit) |
