Results and Reports for June 22-28, 2002AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Illawarra Cycle ClubWest Dapto, NSW, June 29, 2002Forrest stands tallWith the gale force winds experienced over the preceding days, only the toughest (or silliest) riders rode out for the 44.5km scratch races last Saturday afternoon. But as it turned out the wind wasn't that strong and the racing conditions were quite good. Better known as a proactive rider rather than a reactive rider, Adam Rourke didn't disappoint the A grade field. He attacked within the first few kilometres and several riders with him. The quartet of Rourke, Chris Brown, Paul Forrest and Marcus Arnold worked well together but were caught after five or six kilometres by the hard working chasing bunch. Forrest, Rourke and Brown again rode away on the easy side of Marshall Mount and worked hard to stay away this time. At the end of the first lap they had a minute gap back to Arnold and Mark Wall, who were chasing hard. On the second climb of the step side of Marshall Mount Forrest attacked and rode away from the other two, staying clear to win by 57 seconds from Brown, with Rourke a further 38 seconds back. Mick Shannon was the early protagonist in the B grade race with an attack 4km after the start. He put in a concerted effort and stayed away for several kilometres before being brought back by the bunch. The climbers in Peter Evans and Austin Pitman made the others suffer on the steep side of Marshall Mount, but the strong riding from Hubert Driehus and Tony Pulo brought the group back together each time. With just over a kilometre to the finish Evans put in a big attack but he was quickly marked by Pitman and Pulo. Pulo lead the sprint out but was outlasted by Pitman with Evans crossing in third place. Bobby Krstevski sent another message to the handicapper that he is ready to make the jump to B grade with another solid ride. The bunch stayed together until the second climb up the easy side of Marshall Mount when Krstevski put the pressure on and took Dean Kelly and Lou Jonceski clear of the bunch. The three riders put a big effort in and built a good gap back to the other riders. Krstevski attacked again on Hooker hill with Jonceski unable to go with him. Closer to the finish he again surged and rode clear of Kelly, finishing 26 seconds in front of him and 1.03 infront of third placed Jonceski. Next weekend's race is the annual Barbara Wyles handicap, with trophies and $300 prize money up for the winning organisers expect a good turn out of riders. Anyone who has not already entered should contact Lionel on 42269278. Group 5 is to marshal. Entries also close next weekend for the Macarthur Interclub on July 20th.
