The fashions at the start line were telling of the climatic conditions with arm warmers, long sleeve jerseys and thermals abound, and with some riders even choosing to race in longs for extra warmth. As the race got started riders slowly warmed up, and then focused their attention away from the chilly conditions and onto the course and the race at hand. The course was run once again in the now popular "reverse" direction, which while including a little less climbing, remains challenging at race pace due to the many sharp soft corners, and the generally high speeds riders carry through the course. A momentary lack of concentration and a bit of bad luck can mean a very close encounter with a tree beside the single track. In the Senior Men's race Ben Geier led the race after one lap riding strongly, but he was reeled in by some good consistent riding on the part of Dave Osmond. Osmond finished the race almost a minute ahead of Geier with Luis Severino finishing strongly in third place, in his first race since coming back from an injury. In the Senior Women's race Julia Graczyk finished first ahead of Jacqui Clyne and Rosie Barnes in second and third place respectively. The slightly flatter nature of the course at Ingledene can make for some close and exciting racing. This was the case in the Sport A Men race where only two seconds separated Paul Eccleston and Steve Peddle, with Dan Smith some minutes back in third place. Veteran Men also enjoyed some close racing with a fast finishing Gary Scheld taking first place, after putting a half minute margin between himself and Simon Tilley in the final lap. David Bush finished third. In Master's Men Paul Lees showed a clean pair of wheels to Richard Davis and John Graydon, by leading from start to finish, and winning with a comfortable margin of over two minutes. Davis and Graydon had a close battle for second place, with Davis managing to hold a fine margin of 13 seconds for the final lap of the race and take second place. Other category winners included Nick Webb in Under 19 Men, Angus Harding in Under 17 Men, Janine Ridsdale in Veteran Women, and Wayne Spratford in Sport B Men. Thanks to our race organiser Phil Hopkins and to our time keepers who braved the cold. The next race in the Winter XC Series is scheduled for 28th July at Stromlo Slopes.
