Results and Reports for AustraliaPromoters wishing to submit results should send them to cyclingnews Friday Night Winter Track Racing Week 16Dunc Grey Velodrome, Sydney, October 1, 2004The final countdownBy Paul Craft The final night was a great celebration of a fantastic series. The newly crowned dual World Champion David Willmott made his first appearance after returning from Manchester. The Red Bull girls were there supplying energy in a can, along with our two major sponsors Ross Harding from Velo Sportz Shortz and Felice from Campagnolo were on hand to contribute to the impressive prize list for the night which totaled in excess of $6000 worth of cash and prizes. The feature race for the night was "The Campagnolo 1.5km Wheelrace". This race was the pinnacle of the season, with riders from each division qualifying into this event over the last 4 weeks. First prize for this handicap was a pair of Campagnolo Pista track wheels and a RIDE Cycling Review subscription. Many expected scratch man Shaun Hopkins to overcome the 18 competitors in front of him to take the victory however the middle markers, especially the division 2 quartet, had other ideas. The race started with Teagan Hines being the hare starting off 235m in a gallant effort to hold off the field. She did well until Chris Murray (190m) and Richard Pettigrew (175m) came bursting out of the pursuing bunch in a repeat of the move that won the pair their wheelrace 3 weeks earlier. At the tail of the field Hopkins had skillfully crossed the gap to the rest of the Div 1 riders, but found no friends in this group willing to sacrifice themselves to allow Hoppy to take the spoils. Hoppy was forced to do a lot of uncharacteristic work in an effort to reach the leaders. With one lap to go he realised his efforts would be fruitless and swung up. This left the door open for a surprise victor. When Murray and Pettigrew began to fade the opportunity was seized upon by Parramatta's Matt Smith who showed his growing class in taking an impressive victory ahead of fellow Div 2 rider Dan O'Callaghan. Cycling Projects representative Felice was there to make the presentation to the delighted riders. The night also had a host of battles for the point score series. In the battle of the two Neil's, it was Neil Land who held onto his slender lead over Neil Liefels. The three-way battle for third place in Div 2 was won by the in-form Matt Smith. Alan Townsend snuck home ahead of Richard Lang in Div 3. The private Husband and Wife battle between Paul and Donna Meehan was won by Paul and Waratah Vets beat the defending team champion, Bicisport, in the club challenge. The NSWCF+NSWIS Time Blaster has been a highlight of the year and at 8minutes 55 seconds was not expected to fall again. However no one counted on the determination of the riders in sharing the workload to hurtle themselves around the track at 51.1km/hr. In the end it was Newcastle's Michael Lewis who profited by taking the win in a time of 8min 49seconds. The big prize draws for the top five of each grade in the Handle Bar Tavern went well with Graham McClymont, Geoff Worthington and Matt Smith taking the minor prizes. The Grand Prize a Team Alex frame valued at $2100 was won by likable junior women's rider Teagan Hines who was almost speechless with joy. Many Thanks to Ross Harding of Velo Sportz Shortz and Mark Rowling from Turramurra Cyclery for their sponsorship and support.
